The French Revolution is the political, social and economic movement that arose in
France in 1789, and which brought as consequence, the collapse of the absolutist monarchy,
that until then reigned and which, in turn, originated the definitive establishment of the
democratic republican government.
France was ruled by an absolute monarchy that governed with unlimited power. The
king, who thought himself appointed by God to govern, proceeded arbitrarily, for he did not
give any account of his actions to anyone; spent as and when he wanted the income of the
state; appointed officials; declared war and signed peace; dictated laws; created taxes, and he
could even dispose of the property of his subjects when he deemed it convenient. There was
no individual Liberty, for the sovereign could order the arrest of any citizen without a
justified cause; Nor was there freedom of conscience and worship and no book or newspaper
could be published except under the control of censorship. On the other hand, the laws, which
were diverse, were not applied equally thus, we have that for the same crime the penalty was
not the same as a nobleman and a peasant.
