Question 1: Importance of planning goals and strategies during the negotiation
process and a description of the difference between goals and strategies
For a successful negotiation process, one has to be ready by having well set planning goals
and strategies of how they want the outcome to be. The two are important in that they clearly
explain the desired position and step by step guide to get there. A planning goal is a set of certain
desired standard that an individual or a system has to reach. They can be either long term or short
term. Strategies are the step by step developments aimed at achieving the goals. Strategies can
also be defined as means of attaining goals. There are three types of strategies; cooperate strategy,
business unit strategy and operational strategy. The main difference between the two is while a
goal serves as specific aim/objective inspiring and individuals to work towards, strategy serves as
the system, pattern or means by which goals are achieved (Kolb & Williams, 2006).
