Introduction
Globally, retailers have been concerned with their businesses due to theft considerably,
and it has become quite a concern on how to prevent these losses. The losses may be either
internal and or from external losses, employees and clients/shoppers concurrently. In other
words, the theft may be either from errors done by the firm administrators, other staff members
and also by shoplifting from the clients which ultimately makes the firms make negative
balances, and this greatly impacts on profitability. According to Fortune, retailers lost about $32
billion from shoplifting alone last year ("Retailers lost $32 billion to shoplifting, worker theft last
year", 2017).
In a survey conducted by the study, it is estimated that the retail industry had a shrinkage
rate of about 1.23% across all the 18 retail verticals according to the survey during the 2014–
2015 years. The total cost of shrinkage stood at $123.39 billion globally. It was an increase of
1.42% higher than any other years ("Retailers lost $32 billion to shoplifting, worker theft last
year", 2017).
Clearly, this constitutes that set rules are supposed to be made, ones that are more vigil
about deterring and or stopping this menace altogether. Hence the need for retail loss prevention
which entails practices used to prevent loss and ensure the businesses get max profits. Shrinkage
is thus what is further expanded as preventable losses that can therein be avoided in any business
brought about by inadvertent individuals and or through deliberate means. These actions may
either be vandalism, theft, misconduct, theft among other felonies.
