Explanation & Answer

Bacteria are mainly unicellular microorganisms that are able to reside in many places including soil, the human body, water, hot springs and even deep within the earth crusts. The term “good bacteria” and “bad bacteria” are usually referring to the interaction of certain bacteria with the human body. In this, it is often said that good bacteria are the ones that benefit the human or animal host, while bad bacteria are those that act as pathogens. Therefore it is most fitting that the scope of the discussion of good versus bad bacteria in this write-up will be on their role within, and their interaction with, the human body. The good bacteria basically function as mutualists while the bad ones are parasitic in nature. Structurally, there are no unique differences between the two, and even certain good bacteria can become pathogens if they colonize a habitat that they are not used to be in. Suffice to say that the main difference between good and bad bacteria depends on their function when they colonize their human hosts. One common example of good bacteria would be the flora of the gut, also known as gut microbiota, that inhabits the whole length of the gastrointestinal system. As the gut microbiota colonize the bowel, pathogens or the so-called bad bacteria will have a hard time trying to find a space to inhabit for themselves. The good bacteria also secrete antibacterial substances that protect the bowel from becoming infected by pathogens (Yoon, Lee, & Yoon, 2014). The hosts also benefit from gut microbiota as the latter help to promote maturation of the intestinal lining, to m...
