The Picture of Dorian Gray
Chapter One
a. Why does Basil refuse to show Dorian's portrait?
Basil is not comfortable with sharing the portrait of Dorian Gray because of, in his words, the
“curious artistic idolatry” of the subject in the portrait, He knows the gentleman and is strangely
fascinated by him but it is a cause of great anxiety for Basil and he refuses to show the painting because
of it.
b. Why doesn't Basil want Henry to meet Dorian?
Basil is afraid that Henry will influence the young man, because Henry is not the most
scrupulous of fellows. He also doesn't want Henry to try and convince Dorian that the painting should
be shown.
