The Atlantic Slave Trade
Introduction
The Atlantic slave trade began at around 15th century when the whites in African
countries transported the Africans to their countries to European countries so as to provide labor
services on white settlers lands. The increase in Atlantic slave trade was as a result of increased
plantation of cotton on the white settler’s farms hence the demand for labor force increased. To
deal with increased labor force demands resulted to the importation of Africans as slaves to work
on the cotton farms and mines hence the rise of Atlantic slave trade. The slaves were mainly
taken from the west and central Africa. British was the main European country that imported a
large number of slaves from Africa and supplied them to other nations. The study will, therefore,
discuss the middle passage from Africa to European countries and determine the problems and
difficulties encountered by the slaves while on board (Boddy-Evans, 2017).
The Middle Passage from Africa to the Colonies
The slaves were transported from Africa to the European countries by the use of ships
through the Atlantic hence the emergence of the name Atlantic slave trade. Britain was the main
exporter of the slaves to other parts of North and South America. As readers, we come to know
about the conditions on the ships through the autobiography of Olaudah Equiano who was
among the slaves who were transported to European countries. He ascertains that indeed life on
the ship was not easy as Africans were oppressed from physical to mental torture, women were
sexually harassed and men tight down their legs in the deck. They suffered from diseases and
malnutrition which led to increased deaths in the middle passage. Due to the increased number of

deaths of slaves on a ship, there was a reduction in the number of slave per deck and doctors
were allowed to border on the ship so as to deal with any emergency concerning health. The
ships usually took around two to three months depending on the weather condition before the
slaves reach in the Europe. Furthermore, the transatlantic trade served three main functions:
transportation of slaves from Africa to European countries, transportation of the manufactured
goods from Europe to Africa, and the transport of plantations from America to Europe hence the
emergency of triangular trade (Eltis, 2007).
Conclusion
The study concludes that Africans underwent harsh conditions during the middle passage.
A large number of the slaves died in the early years of transatlantic trade hence forcing the
colonies to put in place mechanisms on how to ensure the safety of the slaves while on board.
Moreover, the study provides readers with knowledge on the conditions and how African slaves
were transported to the European countries. In addition, insight knowledge...
