The Victorian age backed by the Gilded Age as referred to by Mark Twain was a combination of
the industrial and commercial wealth that had begun to accumulate owing to the unparalleled
growth in technology. The rapid economic growth of this period gave the merchant and upper
classes of America the context of a rich western cultural heritage and tradition. America saw a
unique blend of technology and western tradition and the art and architecture at the time
expressed the change and creativity that the Americans had brought into their lives. However,
with this accumulation of wealth comes the differentiation of classes which elaborates the leisure
class in hierarchical gradations (Flagler Museum, 2021). This is explained through Thorstein
Veblen’s theory of Conspicuous consumption which can be used to understand the leisure class
in the Victorian age and how the flamboyant ownership and display of wealth soon created ranks
and grades whereby the lower classes were exploited by the upper class. Americans in the
Victorian age justified conspicuous consumption as a way of developing to their highest and best
