He was outside playing in his yard barefoot. He accidentally stepped on something sharp that cut into his foot. He complained that it hurt a lot and that it was really hard to swallow. His mother rushed him to the ER, and went in to see a doctor. The doctor asked the mom for the son’s vaccination history. She gave it to him and it showed that he received a flu shot 4 months ago, he received a tetanus vaccination as a baby but no booster shot yet. He also received both the Hepatitis A and B vaccine. He had never been hospitalized for anything before. The doctor began doing a physical exam in order to diagnose the problem. He noticed that the boy’s heart rate was abnormally rapid, and he noticed the rigidity of his neck muscles. He took a swab sample from the wound and sent it to the lab. It stained gram-positive, but there was not much other information that could be gained from the stain. The doctor gave the boy a sedative to relax his muscles, which were beginning to spasm, and an antibiotic. He then cleaned the wound on his foot. Clostridium tetani
