Before Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) was coined in 1990, it only applied to
inventory control and management in manufacturing company sectors. The program had initially
been created by software engineers to monitor inventory, reconcile them and report the balances.
Over time, it has evolved beyond inventory to other back office processes and functions
including human resources, supply chain and accounting. The software has become ERP as it is
known today. An ERP system is a framework which businesses utilize to organize, define and
standardize their business processes for effective planning and control of an organization which
is useful in using internal knowledge to achieve external advantages.
Enterprise Resource Planning integrates various functions and processes of an
organization into one complete system hence streamlining processes and information across the
organization (SAP ERP Software, n.d.). Therefore, the central feature for all enterprise resource
planning systems is the shared database which supports multiple functions useful in different
