Slavery in Caribbean and Carolina
Origin and spread of slavery in Carolina and Caribbean was a complex one, and which
commenced in 1600 and ended in 1760. It was chiefly based on the urge for labor in the
European colonies, particularly on plantations in the Caribbean sugar colonies that were operated
by France, Spain, Greta Britain and the Dutch Republic. Most of the slaves were imported from
the Caribbean and not directly from Africa. The Atlantic slave trade led to the formal arrival of
the slaves in the Caribbean. The active efforts of John Rolfe resulted in the production of tobacco
as a major crop in 1611. More labor was thus required when it was noted that it would drive
Jamestown colony. The British aristocracy also needed workforce for the plantations in America.
Thus, the major possibilities were from the Native Americans, indentured servants obtained from
Britain and the West Africans. There was a major establishment of African slavery in the
colonies with Charles Town founding and the Carolina province in 1670.
The planters from the overpopulated Barbados, a British sugar island founded the colony
thus bringing many African slaves. Colonists initially practiced Indian slavery as it was tricky to
acquire African slaves. Slavery spread from the South Carolina, to Georgia, across Virginia and
its influence which had crossed the Appalachians to Kentucky and Tennessee. Most of the
African slaves were sent to Caribbean sugar colonies or Spanish Americans. Slavery was an
increasingly effectual system for the plantation owners. Thus was profit would be gained in both
the voyages and farms due to cheap labor. The African slaves were preferred to the indentured
servants since they were cheap and had no arms. Additionally, unlike the indentured servants, the
Africans slaves were not susceptible to rebellion. South Carolina was more productive as
compared to the North Carolina.

According to Berman (2016), the sugar and tobacco production were the sources of
money for the colonies in forms of taxes for instance. However, their production declined due to
inhuman labor and transfer of slaves without additional wages. It led to falling of economics in
the colonies. In some parts of the Caribbean and Brazil when African slave dominated the
economy through the sugar plantations, most of the slaves were directly or indirectly put to work
in the sugar industry. Sugarcane plantation workers spent long hours planting, harvesting and
maintaining the sugarcane under dangerous and hot tropical conditions. The slaves in the field
were made to cut down big acres of sugarcane and transport to water, animal or wind-driven
mills for extraction of the juice. The slaves faced distinct difficulties such as sexual assault and
their work never ended till death (Burns Ph.D., 2016). Their death led to a decrease in many
slaves and thus a decline in production too especially those in sugarcane farms in the Caribbean
who faced high mortality rates.
British settlement in Carolina
Dominant settlements began in the year 1651 as part of the northern sector of the British
colony in Carolina attracted the Virginia, Pennsylvania besides frontiersman while the southern
parts of Carolina were located by wealthy English farmers who depended on the slave workforce
in their farming of rice, indigo as well as cotton. The capital city of the South Carolina,
Charleston, became a chief port for transportation and exportation of crops that were grown in
the South Carolina through the Atlantic Ocean the Atlantic Ocean. It made South Carolina as the
most successful colonies (Adler, 2015). The Spanish from Florida, as well as the local Indian
leaders, battled with the colonial government which led to the threatening of the pirates. Due to
abundant food, the population increased profoundly as a result of an increase in the birth rates.
Nevertheless, there was enlargement of the plantations in agriculture facilitated to a greater

number of the African slaves that were imported to increase labor force which also comprised
the locals in the population.
The colony introduced laws as well as self-government and developed promise to the
Republicans, which were terrifying to the Patriots after the births kingdom threatened them after
1765. Commercial as well as political relations between Great Britain inclined to be loyal if a
revolution incident emerged. In 1975, South Carolina merged with the American Revolution, but
they were unsuccessful as they were subdivided into either loyalists or patriots. The British
attacked the land in 1780 and took most states, but later they were evaded. Due to productivity
and a good traffic position, many Europeans preferred owning it than then North Carolina.
During the Revolution era, this colony was referred as the South Carolina.
British settlements in the Caribbean
Caribbean Settlements by the European started with Cristopher Columbus. Conducting
elegant and primitive commission approved him the governor of the lands that have been
discovered. After the Portuguese entrance in the coast in the West Africa, Columbus planned to
venture into post trading domain. The chief objective was to find a direct connection with the
producers, therefore, eliminating the middlemen. He also intended to get a connection with the
Christians who were well known for their gold production which was in high demand in Europe.
Nevertheless, Columbus had intentions of spreading Christianity to new people who were not
into Christianity. In the Caribbean life, Columbus did not succeed in his business. The Indians
lacked commodities for trading with Columbus; therefore, he made flights in search of trading
products. Later traces of gold were found at Hispaniola, but Columbus was unlucky as he lacked
enough administrative skills. Therefore, he went back to Spain to look whether his first authority
was being snatched away by the monarchs. Nicholas Ovando stated the appropriate settlement in

the Caribbean Ovando. Nicholas was a loyal soldier from Spain (Mohler, &Johnson, 2009).
Nicholas settled with other 2500 members colonists. This group was well organized having
specific objectives such as mentor Indies economically, religiously as well as help them spread
out politically.
The present colony was known as the Santo Domingo increased and spread throughout
the Caribbean heading to the mainland. In 1509, the colonists settled in Jamaica, and the
following year they settled in Trinidad. In the year 1518, the first African slave was brought to
the Caribbean. These slaves spoke the Castilian language then later on relocated to Spain. They
were known as Ladinos. At the beginning of 17th century, enemies of the Spain and Europeans
started feeling weak, and they parted with the Europeans, and they started violating the
boundaries of the Spain, Americans. The French, as well as the English, began business forts
along Hudson. French, English alongside with the Dutch tried to settle at Guiana, South
America, but they were unsuccessful, but later the Dutch succeeded. In the Caribbean, the
significance of the colonists was not different to other settlers in the North America. Attempts to
develop microcosm of Europe were slowly rejected in respect to series of farming societies using
the slave workforce to increase their output for stable markets in Europe. In this process, a lot
transformation in the Caribbean occurred.

Elizabeth I. approved a charter to Humphrey Gilbert for his innovation in overseas
searches in the year 1578. In the same year, Humphrey started his sailing journey to...
