Description

Dr. Martin Luther King’s “I Have a Dream” speech is considered a classic modern American address (Link to see and listen to the speech: https://www.americanrhetoric.com/speeches/mlkihaveadream.htm ). He spoke at a time when segregation was still the law in many states. Although he was directly addressing a supportive crowd gathered in Washington, D.C., he was also aware of the larger audience, many of whom were hostile, that would be reached through print and electronic media. No one could have foretold the dramatic and historic effect that this speech would have for decades to come. Review a transcript of this speech and then write an essay or speech on one or more of the following questions:

a. How did Dr. King use ethos, logos, and pathos to persuade his audience to consider his appeal?
b. What aesthetic elements—for example, metaphors, repetition, Biblical references—were used to create a unified, eloquent address?
c. To what extent has Dr. King’s inspiring dream been realized? What remains to be done to create the society he envisioned?

Every time I hear this speech I get emotional, and I feel like we are still facing the same issues. Police brutality, race discrimination, is still existing. George Floyd is evidence for this case. This speech was for the future, the past, and the present time in which Dr. King lived it. Dr. King was extremely involved in trying to end racial discrimination and his speech (“I Have a Dream”) was one of the biggest demonstrations the nation's capital has ever seen. he was hopeful full and believed every word and the audiences felt that positive energy. There were about 250,000 people, and Dr. King knew that his words would reach more people. Dr King used the rhetorical triangle composed of ethos, pathos, and logos, in his speech. Dr. King convinced the audience with his credibility, He also evoked his audience's emotion, and he presented his speech with reasoning and evidence. His speech is appealing to all different audiences because of his use of these rhetorical appeals. Dr. king-hit everyone of persuasions, ethos, logos, and pathos, and his speech is one of the best and historical speech. What aesthetic elements-for example, metaphors, repetition, Biblical references were used to create a unified, eloquent address? This speech is an absolute masterclass of a speech. Martin Luther King Jr.'s words here formed to create arguably the most memorable speech in American history. As a kid growing up, I remember the phrase “I have a dream" sticking in my head when I heard it for the first time. Even in my middle school texts books it seemed any picture of MLK had the words "I have a dream" plastered in front of it. I believe this is a testament to just how strong the message and symbolism behind those words are in this country. I think it was a brilliant reference to the American dream which states that all people who come to this nation have an opportunity to succeed and achieve what they wish. Even the beginning of this speech was a call back to another great speech, the Gettysburg Address. This shows great confidence and strength in MLK to start with alluding the importance of your speech to one lauded as one of the finest orations in the country's history to that point. I feel this also shows that even though time has past from that speech made by the late president Lincoln we are still facing the same problems which were sought to be solved a century before. This grabs people's attention and let's them know right from the start what this speech is about and where it will go from that very first line. Martin Luther King Jr.'s use of repetition may very well be the best example of how to use this technique and why you would want to use it. Repetition in a speech is used to emphasize a point in the speech that holds great importance to its message. Repetition can also be used to make a speech a bit easier to follow and give a speech strong rhythm and cadence. The two phrases that are repeated multiple times in MLK's speech are “I have dream" and "Let freedom ring”. These two phrases are very good summations of what the speech is about. I have a dream symbolizes that the words that follow have not been realized and are wished to happen soon. Let freedom ring shows that the biggest thing MLK wants is freedom; he wants freedom for all people of color and all those who are oppressed. In two short phrases you understand what the speech is about. Lastly Martin Luther King Jr. was a reverend so naturally there was going to be biblical references scattered throughout his speech. The list of references to the bible and different religious hymns are too many to list in a short essay. The 12 (( speech is about and where it will go from that very first line. The ones that stuck out the most to me were “we cannot walk alone" and "let us not wallow in the valley of despair”. Walking with the lord is a strong connotation in many Christian religions; so, saying that no one can walk alone and expect to get where they want to go. This links the mission of MLK to the gospel in a subtle way that people of different ethnicities would all be able to relate to and understand. In the Christian faith walking through the valley of death is a well-known psalm. Creating a parallel to a valley of despair instantly creates understanding and sympathy with anyone who knows the Christian faith. « less 0 O Unread O Replies Views
