Lab 3. Hydrometer Analysis

March 30, 2017

When the soils are not thick granular, but the soils have small grain sizes, it will not
be possible to do granulometric analysis by meshes (sieves), to determine the weight
percentage of the different sizes of the soil grains. It is appropriate to apply the
hydrometer (densimeter) method, nowadays for fine soils is perhaps the most widely
used test, the fact is that the particles have a sedimentation rate that is related to the
size of the particles. In the hydrometer analysis, the ratio between the velocity of fall
between the spheres of a fluid, the diameter of the sphere, the specific weight of
both the sphere and the fluid, and the viscosity of the fluid, as expressed by the Law
of Stokes. In this law it is stated that if a spherical particle falls into the water it soon
acquires a uniform velocity that depends on the diameter of the particle, its density
and the viscosity of the water.
