WHAT WAS THE ARTICLE ABOUT (content of the one page paper/article)? RECOMMENDATIONS/COMENTS: TOPIC TITLE: Women Degraded in Chalk Talk TITLE OF THE ARTICLE: Texas A&M suspends 2 assistant coaches over slideshow, apologizes SOURCE OF THE ARTICLE: Internet- http://www.espn.com/college-football/story/_/id/17175699/texas-aggies-suspendassistant-coaches-degrading-slide-show DATE OF THE ARTICLE: Aug 2, 2016 RELEVANCE OF THE ARTICLE TO DISCUSSION: We’ve discussed in class the way women are accommodated in sports with different regulations such as Title IX, however these types of regulations don’t solve the problem with how women are viewed in the sports community. Before in class, we had a PE where a coach was doing inappropriate things to a woman, some were apparently fine with it while one particular woman felt more than offended. The PE and this article has a situation, where what is considered appropriate to say/do to a woman is not clear to the professionals in the sports industry. IDENTIFY ONE WORD YOU WILL INCLUDE IN YOUR VOCABULARY: Sexual Overtones- Is visual, verbal, written or behavioral material or action implying sexual intent WHAT QUESTION(S) DO YOU HAVE ABOUT THE ARTICLE? How many sports professionals have this warped sense of humour? How does this affect the younger generation that see this sort of behavior? WHAT WAS THE ARTICLE ABOUT? During an event called the “Chalk Talk” Texas A&M coaches Jim Turner and Jeff Banks led the presentation that is designed to educate female fans on the game of football. It is believed that the coaches were trying to be funny, however some females took offense to the sexual jokes in the presentation. Aggies Coach Kevin Sumlin suspended the two coaches for two weeks without pay while also having to serve 20 hours community service each. Sumlin was unaware of the presentation that was taking place and apologized with his colleagues for degrading the female fans. The specific slides that were posted on social media is seen below. RECOMMENDATIONS/COMMENTS: Its shame these people were willing to do something this rash and immature in front of 700 female fans that were going out of their way to participate in an event to learn more about a passion they were curious of. This can easily discourage the women interested in this hobby. I am by no means a sports fan, but considering that if I went to an event to learn more about my newest hobbies and then get silly jokes instead of the information I was promised. I’d be a little more than disappointed, and depending on the community I might just drop the hobby or just learn about it myself. Its discouraging and insulting. TOPIC TITLE: The topic of this article is gender and sport. TITLE OF THE ARTICLE: When We Attack Serena Williams’ Body, About Her Blackness SOURCE OF THE ARTICLE: Huffington Post: http://www.huffingtonpost.com/entry/serena-williams-policing-of-blackbodies_us_55a3bef4e4b0a47ac15ccc00 DATE OF ARTICLE: July 13, 2015 NAME OF AUTHOR: The author of this article is Zeba Blay. RELEVANCE OF THE ARTICLE TO CLASS DISCUSSION This article is relevant to the class discussions because it sheds a light on the body shaming of tennis star Serena Williams. Throughout this article Blay expresses the imitations of Serena Williams’ physique. In AFR 375 we discuss issues presented in the article. IDENTIFY ONE WORD YOU WILL INCLUDE IN YOUR VOCABULARY (give definition and meaning of the word) Dysmorphic- Malformed or misshapen. Usually pertains to an abnormality in the shape or size of a body part. WHAT QUESTION (S) DO YOU HAVE ABOUT THE ARTICLE? Why is Serena Williams being stigmatized for her plentiful physique, rather than praised for athletic abilities? Why was Caroline Wozniacki allowed to compete against Serena Williams after she imitated her? WHAT WAS THE ARTICLE ABOUT (content of the one page paper/article)? This article titled “When we attack Serena Williams’ Body, About her blackness.” is simply about Serena Williams, the famous tennis star. The article discusses the body shaming that takes place when the name Serena Williams is brought up. Williams is nearly humiliated for her athletic physique. She is referred to as gorilla, manly, and savage throughout the article. The author addresses the attacks Williams gets for being more muscular than her opponents. The articles states “This isn’t about the fact that Williams isn’t tall, slim and a size two. It’s about the fact that she isn’t white.”. This quote proves that Serena Williams is being defamed for being African American. Although Serena should be praised for her impeccable tennis abilities she is recognized for her “dysmorphic” body. RECOMMENDATIONS/COMENTS: This article helped me recognize the stigmatisms black women experience daily because of their unique appearance. Black women are often times shamed and discriminated against for their physical features. Rather than uplifting these women for their unique features, our society dishonors and then duplicates. Women of other races botch themselves to mock black women, these botches include lip plumping and body enhancements. TOPIC TITLE: The topic of this article is race and sports. TITLE OF THE ARTICLE: L.A. Clippers Owner to GF: Don't Bring Black People to My Games ... Including Magic Johnson SOURCE OF THE ARTICLE: Internet - TMZ: http://www.tmz.com/2014/04/26/donald-sterling-clippers-owner-blackpeople-racist-audio-magic-johnson/ DATE OF ARTICLE: April 25, 2014 NAME OF AUTHOR: TMZ (no specific author) RELEVANCE OF THE ARTICLE TO CLASS DISCUSSION This article is relevant to the class because it discusses stories about racism in sports. In the class, we have discussed some of the problems of racism in sports; Remember the Titans, a movie about the true story that occurred in 1971 about the football team of a white southern high school, T. C. Williams High School. A black head coach was hired in order to lead the football team of that high school, and the high school had already a current white coach. Also, black students were integrated to the white high school, and the high school football team had to be unified of black and white students; and that leads to many racial tensions in the high school. IDENTIFY ONE WORD YOU WILL INCLUDE IN YOUR VOCABULARY (give definition and meaning of the word) Discrimination - the unjust or prejudicial treatment of different categories of people or things, especially on the grounds of race, age, or sex. WHAT QUESTION (S) DO YOU HAVE ABOUT THE ARTICLE? After listening to the whole audio for this incident, and quoting: V Stiviano: “I didn’t remove Matt Kemp and Magic Johnson, but I thought …” Sterling: “Why?” V Stiviano: “I thought Matt Kemp is mixed, and he was OK, just like me.” V Stiviano: “He’s lighter and whiter than me.” Since his girlfriend, Stiviano, is mixed black and Mexican, and her response to Sterling was in such way. Does her response make her racist too? And what does that supposed to mean? That Sterling problem is not recognizing extraordinary black people? WHAT WAS THE ARTICLE ABOUT (content of the one page paper/article)? The article is about the Los Angeles Clippers owner Donald Sterling telling his girlfriend, V Stiviano, racist comments about black people. Those odious comments were made because she posted a photo in Instagram with a famous African-American basketball player, Magic Johnson. Also, such offensive comments were made because she brought black people to his games. All of those disturbing racist declarations against black people were recorded in an audio. Furthermore, this is not the first time Sterling making such a racist behavior, there were couple of racist actions made by him against other races too. He was sued before for refusing renting apartments to Latinos and Blacks. RECOMMENDATIONS/COMMENTS: It is a shame seeing people doing such a racist behavior, especially in the recent year. Such behaviors should have been diminished by now. People should learn from the lessons previous years taught us, that discrimination and racism will lead to nowhere, but retrogression. If we check the most successful companies and organizations of any kind, we will find that they are diverse, and there are no racism or discrimination, or at least at the minimum. I do not only blame Sterling, I also blame his girlfriend for not responding accordingly for such racist comments. Since she is mixed, black and Mexican, and those offensive comments were against the black people, does not that offend her?
