Nelson Rolihlahla Mandel was born on 18th July 1918 in South Africa a village called
Mvezo. He was introduced to Christianity in his early childhood as his mother was a staunch
Christian thus ensured he attended church services every Sunday. Hence, Christianity became
part of his life. He attended Methodist mission school where he learned English, Xhosa history
and geographicy but he was fascinated with African history. He later attended the Methodist
college in Fort Beaufort. In 1939, he begun to work on his Bachelor degree at the university of
Fort in Hare.
Despite having friends connected to the African National Congress (ANC) and antiimperialist movement who wanted the independence of south Africa, Nelson avoided any
involvement with the movement in fact, he became a vocal supporter of the British war effort
when the second world war broke out. He later stated that he did not join the movement as its...
