Description

Leona is 52 years old and smokes. She is also overweight and has atherosclerosis. When she was given a two-week vacation from work, she packed up her bags and flew from Minnesota to Sydney, Australia, for the trip she always wanted to take. Unfortunately, just three days after she arrived, she was hospitalized when her left calf became inflamed, causing her considerable pain. The physician attending to her told her she developed a deep vein thrombosis.

  1. Explain, using your knowledge of hypercoagulability, why the trip to Australia contributed to Leona’s DVT? Why was Leona already at risk for thrombus development?
  2. How does Leona’s atherosclerosis affect platelet function? Conversely, what is the effect of increased platelet activity on the development of atherosclerosis?
  3. How do atherosclerosis and immobility promote changes in blood coagulation?
  4. When Leona was in hospital, she received heparin therapy. Explain why this course of action was taken to treat her DVT. Why was she not given heparin tablets to take back to the hotel with her?

Deep Vein Thrombosis

Hypercoagulability is also known as thrombophilia or a prothrombotic state. The state is
observable in a majority of people who have deep vein thrombosis caused by various diverse
issues. The hypercoagulability, in most cases, develops a thrombosis in the presence of
additional risk factors. The state which involves blood clots in the vessels is a serious health care
concern and could result in the death of the patient. Thrombosis is experienced more by elderly
adults and occurs mostly in the leg veins. The first main case of thrombophilia which was
identified as antithrombin deficiency was identified in the U.S in 1965, and increased
occurrences came in the 1990s (McRae, 2014). The risk for thrombophilia and deep vein
thrombosis (DVT) increases with the habit of smoking and increased body weight. DVT is also
enhanced by atherosclerosis.
Hypercoagulability and Immobility
The tendency to form blood clots within the veins and arteries limits blood flow and
adversely affects the health of the patient. Insufficient blood supply to parts of the body could
result in severe illnesses such as stroke and consequent death of the individual. DVT is a
condition which could be present at birth or acquired during a person’s life course. It could be
mild and harmless or severe and death-threatening for different cases o...
