The American Dream in Crisis
What does the American dream mean? For long, the American dream has been noted to
contain the promise of a better life. In short, the American dream ‘is that anyone, regardless of
his or her origins, can have a fair start in life. If we work hard, we can get a good education and
achieve success’. It has been the moving position on the shining city on the mountain. However,
in his book, Robert Putnam exposes an underbelly that has for long gone unaddressed.
The working thesis of the book is that while the country is supposed to provide equal
opportunities for all, there has been an emergence of ‘opportunity gap’ based on the parenting. It
is a picture in which he discredits that only effort and ability determine the success that a child
