Great job on your response this week and I enjoyed reading the article you shared about component analysis.  Further, I like the use of contrived mediating stimulus and DRA in the treatment package.  I agree that the “drop out” procedure would definitely help the behavior analyst to determine which treatment was more effective.  This is similar to alternating treatment design which would also show which treatment was more effective.  Additionally, as you mentioned, it is important that the behavior analyst select the procedure that is least restrictive for the client while also making sure the treatment will yield a successful outcome.

Hello Ashton,

I think you gave a very good example that relates to something that would occur in real life. I had a difficult time coming up with something. I agree that a multiple independent variable is not preplanned. In this case, we can see that the teacher was just praising Jack and in reality, that could be what was changing his behavior. Reversal designs are a great way to compare the effects of the different interventions (Cooper, Heron, & Heward, 2007). We would go back to baseline after the treatment has been introduced to determine if the treatment that was used was the reason why the behavior changed. With a multiple treatment reversal design, would you do the baseline, then treatment A, then baseline, then treatment B? So ABACA or would you do ABCABC? I'm just wondering so I can know if I am understanding what method you are using. Great post!

Hi Maria,

I agree that a preference assessment is important to determining strong reinforcers for a client.  If the analyst arbitrarily picks the reinforcers, they may have no value to the client.  Therefore, they will not be helpful for behavior change.  The preference assessment allows the analyst to obtain a variety of items with reinforcing value. Using parametric analysis is a good tool for comparing the results of different values of an independent variable.  This allows the analyst to determine which delivery of the independent variable is most effective.

You did a great job with your response and it helped me to understand parametric analysis a little better.  This was a difficult discussion thread for me and I enjoyed reading the responses this week.  Though, I will still need to read more research articles to understand this concept, I do agree with your intervention for treating a client with SIB as it is a good decision to treat the behavior that is on extinction with caution.  In contrast, if you were to treat your client who is on extinction and exhibits tantrum behavior that does not pose serious harm to others with intermittent schedule of reinforcement it would be okay.  Good job.

Hello Adam Jones,

I concur with you regarding the ethical violation presented in your hypothetical case example. It’s important to maintain the client’s confidentiality all the time. According to the BACB (2014) ethical standards, practitioners must take reasonable precautions to protect the client’s confidentiality. There are few instances where certain client’s information could be revealed and it must be established by the law, company polices, and scientific relationships. For example,HIPAA has established very strict privacy procedures to be followed by a solo or group practice, and institutional programs.  Professionally, I will be ready for these types of events before something happens because even taking reasonable steps some information can be recognized by others (Thacker, 2003). Thanks for your post!

Hi Christina,

The nature of behavior analysis is to help others.  Therefore, when someone asks a behavior analyst for help, It is easy to become involved in a dual relationship.  The fact that Trevor is in a rural area makes his even more susceptible to dual relationships.  The advantage that Trevor has is that there is another behavioral analyst in the area.  Therefore, whenever Trevor's services are requested by someone who he already has a relationship with, he can refer them to the other analyst. This arrangement can help both Trevor and the other analyst to avoid becoming involved in dual relationships.
