Running head: HUMAN TRAFFICKING AND SOCIAL WORK Human Trafficking and Social Work Student Name School Name March 19, 2017 1 Human Trafficking and Social Workers 2 Human Trafficking and Social Work Human trafficking is the act that involves transporting humans/people unlawfully mainly for forced labor or for commercialized sex. A social worker is the person whose work is helping individuals, groups and communities to realize their skills and develop them in resolving their own problems and those of the community. Human trafficking is commonly done under hidden circumstances; therefore, it is hard for public or the authorities involved to realize that there are victims of it or there is such a thing going on. Some victims have reported these cases to the relevant authorities while most of them fear from standing out of the crowd due to stigmatization in their particular communities. There are several indicators of human trafficking such as tight security in the established working areas where there are commonly dark glasses of windows which are highly grilled, closed doors, the location is deserted and the area surveillance is electronic (Landesman, 2003). The victims are under survey when taken for health services, victims live together Also there is much slavery where the victims are kept under fear, psychological torture, intimidation and each victim has a different experience of sexual abuse or forced labor. In addition, the sex abused victims are not allowed to leave the brothel. If is a forced labor victim is not permitted to go away from the area of work. However, for instance human sex trafficking is commonly experienced along the streets, busy towns or at working where sexual services are offered such as in brothels in pornographic material production centers and clubs. These places, as mentioned earlier, can work as massage parlors, adult bookstores and modelling studios. In addition, one find him/herself when he/she is a nanny or even in large agricultural production centers where there is no much access of people. Human Trafficking and Social Workers 3 The human trafficking victims is subjected to the following acts; he/she cannot move freely, is subjected to provision of sex acts and is an under 18, in many cases he/she is not paid or get very little payments and work unusual hours. They are usually recruited through false promises involving their work and the working conditions. The victims are usually malnourished, lack proper medical care and avoid direct eye contacts .These people are vulnerable to diseases such as sexually transmitted diseases, diabetes ,cancer and post-traumatic stress. They may suffer problems of unconsciousness and fearfulness depression and submissiveness. They are involved in forced sex or sexual abuse. Action, means, and purpose are the elements linked to human trafficking. Action entails transporting, harboring, providing and soliciting of people. Means involves force or fraud such as sexual abuse or confinement. On the other hand purpose involves labor or sex.Human trafficking is simply a business where human trafficking is done by the victims. In this illegal business there is a motivation of cheap labor and services, therefore, the human traffickers make higher profits. Also the human traffickers feel that there are low risks associated with their illegal business since in most cases there is no enough evidence in case they get prosecuted in courts. Laws and punishments used against them are lenient. Due to these reasons this criminal act will continue to flourish in the community if severe measures are not taken against human trafficking. Human trafficking is conducted through the internet where there is globalization of markets hence its facilitation becomes easy. The victims are hidden from the public hence are mistreated and exploited in underground circumstances. This is because many international companies do not consider work payments, working conditions and the consequences involved in the particular working Human Trafficking and Social Workers 4 conditions. In most cases there is no legal documentation or submission in the company by the victim. A social worker is supposed to give hope and inspiration to the victims .They mainly do these through offering counseling sessions. They give education, housing, employment, cash assistance and even transport the victims to their homes. Since human trafficking entails denial of one’s human rights, the social worker comes in and fight for those rights. A social worker is highly trained in such a way that he/she can handle the victims without further victimization. This will ensure that the victims are able to realize and accept themselves again and are able to continue with their earlier normal life. The social worker creates awareness to the society about the existence of human trafficking and how they should coup up with it. They educate them on the ways to handle he victims without them feeling stigmatized. In order to curb human trafficking several measures need to be taken. These may include; involving medical personnel, police community health representatives and religious leaders in counselling services, more training to the social workers in order for them to be able to give better medical services and identifying the victims. Social workers need also to be involved in human services programs. Creating awareness to the most vulnerable population in the society such as the poor, the person with disabilities, the indigenous and the undocumented immigrants can help curb human trafficking. Also the religious leader can come in through giving education on human trafficking. This will help the society to know the strategies used by the traffickers and caution to take in the internet to enhance online safety. Human trafficking programs need to be introduced in schools bearing in mind the under 18 people are the most vulnerable to the human trafficking as these will enlighten them. In Human Trafficking and Social Workers 5 addition, social work need to be taught in the higher learning institutions both in undergraduate and post graduate as a course on its own. Harsh penalties to drug traffickers need to be introduced. The department of Homeland Securities of US investigate human trafficking practices, arrest and prosecute the traffickers and also give protection to the victims. This department has the Blue campaign which aims at creating awareness to the society about human trafficking and reporting any related cases to the relevant authorities. (Kozak, 2015). In conclusion, any human trafficking case suspected need to be reported to the Florida abuse Hotline at 1-800-96-ABUSE (22873) if the victim trafficked is under 18 or report to the Law Enforcement or the National Human Trafficking Resource Center at 1-888-3737-888 if the victim is over 18.
