Trade-offs is a term that gives rise to the concept of opportunity cost in economics. This
arises when one has to forgo an item over another due to their various characteristics. Likewise,
this may be procreated by quality or quantity of the product being offered by a certain seller over
another one. The factors around which trade-offs occur within a business environment are
varying and may be procreated by machinery involved in producing a product, capital,
technology, a skilled labor force and the availability of raw materials. Usually, trade-offs are
categorized according to their qualitative or quantitative nature. These factors based on their
names address the factors of quality and quantity respectively as aforementioned above. An
organization may base its decision based on either factors or all of them combined.
In light of the above opening statements, this paper seeks to analyze the Capital Arena
case study which is based around the concept of Trade-offs. The case follows a need by Capital
State University to implement a theatrical lighting system. This is procreated by a need for the
arena to host basketball tournaments which require an adequate lighting system. Therefore, the
stadium's management has identified that a solution to their predicament can best be addressed
by a theatrical lighting system. However, this issue is not as pertinent as the need to have a
controller which operates the lighting system. With a view of acquiring this console, the
management through its purchasing department receives a requisition from two reputable
suppliers upon which they contact via telephone.
