CROSS-CULTURAL INTERVIEW ASSIGNMENT & GRADE RUBRIC
PURPOSE:
The purpose of this assignment is to explore and understand the ways in which culture influences the way we
communicate and form relationships with others. The assignment is also designed to help you improve your ability to
communicate competently in cross-cultural interactions and to consider theory on culturally competent care for nurses.
OVERVIEW:
Students will select to interview/dialogue with a person of different race, ethnicity, culture, age, class, power, privilege,
ability, or sexual preference than their own. Students will be informed for this interview with course and independent
theory study on transcultural nursing theory, the specific cultural background of this individual, and a variety of
assessment tools available. There will be several assessment tool suggestions, though students will create the
assessment based on the unique situations envisioned. The goal is that students will present the best of culturally
competent care for individuals like whom you interview, using the classic Leininger steps of Preserve, Accommodate,
and/or Restructure step(s) for enhancing culturally competent care.
You will provide a summary of this experience along with relevant research in a PPT presentation. The PPT should take
no more than 10 minutes to view/appreciate in about 20 informing PPT slides. In the last course module, students will
post the PPT to discussion board, and then the discussion team(s) will view, appreciate, and reply post on your fine and
educational work.
GUIDELINES:
1. Study the essentials of Transcultural or Culture Care Nursing theory.
Seek out at least TWO professional resources (websites, scholarly journals, government sites, etc) to
seek and find on Transcultural or Culture Care theory.
To support the final pieces of this assignment, you advised that one resource would be related to
theorist Madeline Leininger who points to THREE modes/decisions/actions that support culturally
competent nursing care: preserve, accommodate, and restructure (or pattern).
2. Select Individual. Choose someone to interview from a culture that is different from your own (see overview
above).
3. Now, a specific Lit Review. When you know the general cultural background of your selected interviewee, do a
literature review to familiarize yourself with the specific culture of the interviewee BEFORE you interview. Use at
least TWO additional professional resources to support this element of the assignment. ONE piece of the
literature review should be a slide on the overall healthcare status or statistics of this culture’s people or the [for
countries, suggest searching the WHO (World Health Organization) for great supports]. If there are extreme
disparities for this group, suggest WHY this is so, etc.
4. Assessment Tool. Next, create an assessment tool based on Transcultural Nursing theory. See the examples in
the Content > Major Assignment folder. You may utilize elements from these tools (credited to their original
sources) or develop a tool that is entirely your own.
5. Complete the interview. Maintain confidentiality of your interviewee by using only a first name, a code name or
initials in your presentation and/or reports.
6. Consider Culture Contrasts. Think of cultural contrasts – what is similar and what is unique between your
cultural experience(s) and those of whom you interviewed.
7. Nursing implications. Now, imagine you are going to recommend quality, evidence-based care based for this
individual or anyone from this cultural group. Study which mode/decision/action you’d suggest for clients in this
cultural group (using mode(s) of preserve, accommodate, patterning and/or restructuring).
One suggested reference: Leininger's Culture Care Theory (see paragraph at middle of link)
8. Construct a PowerPoint™ summary (approximate max = 20 slides) using the presentation guidelines below.
9. Submit your PPT presentation to appropriate D2L dropbox (for grading) and post to Interview Presentations
discussion forum by date noted on Course Schedule.
