It is worth noting that the Articles of Confederation highly established the first
governmental structure that was more focused on unifying the thirteen colonies that had
participated by fighting in what is identified as the American Revolution. The Articles started to
be embraced or in other words, implemented on March 1st, the year 1781, after it was made sure
that all the thirteen states had ratified them. However, it is essential to remember that these
Articles of Confederation were in operation until March 4th, the year 1789, when the United
States Constitution replaced them with immediate effect (Greene, 1982). The question now
remains, why did these Articles fail after being embraced for only eight years?
It is significant to note that the Articles of Confederation failed because there were strong
states but a weak central government. The sole purpose of these Articles was to establish what is
recognized as a confederation of states hence allowing each state to retain ‘its sovereignty,
independence as well as freedom.’ This is to imply that every state was as independent as
possible and was primarily responsible for the shared defense, the safety of liberties as well as
the general welfare (Schultz & Kevin 2013). Even though Congress was in the position to make
treaties with foreign nations, including other responsibilities such as managing American affairs,
it could not levy taxes or even engage in regulation of commerce. As a result of the existing
widespread fear of a strong central government at the time the Articles of Confederation were
written and also strong loyalties among the individuals in America to their own states, the
Articles kept the states as independent as possible and at the same time kept the national
government as weak as possible. Such an approach resulted in many challenges that made the
