The text is known as “Talk to the rock and other spy tricks” and was written by
Scott Shane from the New York Times. The article was written on January 29, 2006.
It is about how the intelligence reports are being passed from one spy to the other. In
addition to that, the purpose of the article is to show how spying devices are made to
look like the surrounding environment so as to conceal its identity. The devices used
by spies to make dead drops should be completely obscured in order to avoid any
suspicion by the people being spied on.
In my opinion, the Russians had identified that the perpetrator appearing in the
video was a British diplomat spying on behalf of Britain. The individual must have
been collecting intelligence in Russia for a long time for his cover to be blown. I
think the second diplomat noted that the spying gadget was complex and decided to
carry it for further examination. It is noted that the Russians had raised suspicion that
the Briton were using their diplomats and fake rocks to access data and send them to
their spy bosses.
According to Antonio J. Mendez who was a former CIA technician, the device the
is usually used in storing and transmitting data and therefore the device is an electric
dead drop. Most of these drops have secret and be concealed so that the secreting and
retrieval of the information can be done with a lot of ease and secured from any
predators.
In conclusion the, the video clip aired by the Russians was not effective in
discrediting the British intelligence but it just showed a normal failure of a gadget
just like how ATMs malfunction. With the current technology available it is normal

for gadgets to malfunction and it’s normally the fact of the matter that sometimes
technology can fail an individual or even a whole company. It is also this factor that
makes the spying environment a little bit harsh to work in and the activities
challenging.

DEAD DROPS
Alex Hern wrote an article titled ‘Dead Drops: What to do if you see USB sticking out of
a wall’ in “The Guardian,” on eighth march 2015. The author ponders on his inability to keep
secrets and the desire to gain attention in spite of his wish of becoming a spy. According to Hern,
the international community is, however, making his dream a reality due to the building of
anonymous, offline data-sharks that are located in public places. The dead drops were developed
due to the necessity of exchanging sensitive materials among the spies without meeting.
The article discusses an interesting dead drop developed by Aram Bartholl for public use.
Aram’s dead drops involved embedding USB drives in walls around the cities, where one could
look up the location and access the drive thereby accessing any content stored on the drives.
According to the text, a dead drop means the only true public space. The passage recognizes that
there are security reasons associated with accessing these drives as they could lead to the
acquisition of malware on the electronic devices.
According to the article, a German reporter uncovered the plans for bombing and the
procedures for making crystal meth and other dangerous poisons in one of the machines set up in
Cologne. These practices have influenced ...
