Question One
In order to conduct and recover the physical evidence investigation at the crime scene the
following steps must be followed;
1. Establish the scene dimensions and identify potential safety and health hazards –
As an investigator, the first step is to locate the focal point of the scene which is the main
area of disturbance. This must be the room where the victim is found dead—in this case,
it is the bedroom. From the bedroom, the investigator determines a sizeable area that is
likely to have all the relevant physical evidence present at the scene of crime. The
investigators are required to condense the scene so as to avoid the pieces of evidence
being damaged by other people around the crime scene. During the initial approach,
safety must be prioritized. There are several weapons, chemical hazards among others
that could be waiting for respondents. Any personnel such as coroners, fire or medical
coming to the scene must be advised regarding the evidentiary issues (Executive, 2014).
2. Security Establishment
The scene must be secured quickly as soon as possible since, according to Locard’s
Exchange principle, anyone entering or leaving the scene will always add or subtract
material. In order to control the access of the scene, yellow crime scene tape should be
used. While controlling the traffic at the scene, it is of great help to ensure that a common
entry and exit way should be established and since the boundaries have been established,
a documentation of everyone leaving or entering the scene must be done. Also to be
established is an area for consultation and evidence storage (Executive, 2014).

The type of offence that was committed must be determined before collecting any
physical evidence. This helps in predicting the possible evidence that is most likely to be
found at the scene. In order for this to be done successfully, the residents of the house
must be asked some questions regarding the crime. The evidence collection strategy is
determined based on the information received from the witnesses. Some factors to be
considered include weather, time of the day among other factors.
4. Conduct primary survey/walkthrough
Prioritization of the evidence collection is done after the initial survey of the scene has
been conducted...
