This assignment will help you to be able to ‘learn’ and ‘apply’ key international business theories from the course to ‘real-life’ multinational corporations (MNCs). - Type: Individual - Value: 50% (length: up to 2,500 words) - Due: TBA Structure of your Essay: The key question for this essay is: “What are the key challenges for an MNC in the international business arena? Step 1: You need to select a multinational corporation from appendix 1. All companies from the list are ranked among top MNCs from various industries. Step 2: Select one country where your company has invested in (in any foreign direct investment forms). Then, you need to will need to answer the following questions in your essay. Part 1: Analysis of your Multinational Corporation (MNC) In this section you will need to present and analyse key data supporting the status of your company as a multinational corporation. Question 1: Please explain your company’s profile as an MNC. Question 2: Please use one theory related to ‘globalisation of business’ to analyse the status of your company. 2 Part 2: Host Country Analysis You will need to focus on ONE factor from the host country that influences the internationalisation process of the firm. As we focus on political economy and sociocultural factors in the first part of this course, we recommend you to answer the following questions in this section: Question 3: What are the key country/regional factors affecting your firm’s choice of country? Why? Question 4: Please use one theory from the course to support your argument(s). The application of some theories from this course such as Uppsala internationalisation theory, Eclectic paradigm, and Porter’s diamond theory can also be useful at this point. Part 3: Foreign Entry Strategies: In this section you will need to answer these questions: Question 5: What is entry strategy performed by the company? Please use academic resources (i.e. journal articles) to explain the concept of the company’s entry strategy and its benefits/pitfalls. In the recent past, globalization of business and commerce has become an increasingly essential
reality internationally. The rise in globalization is posing several significant challenges to business
organizations that are beginning to venture into the international market. Before committing to seek
international presence, each and every business should consider the huge strategic aspects of the
country they are willing to invest in. Constant flexibility plays a vital role in any international business
venture as it assists the business firms to observe the changing patterns at the local, national and
international levels. The Tata Group is an example of one company that has surpassed the challenges of
investing internationally and realized much profits from their international ventures. This paper seeks
to establish the key challenges for a multinational corporation in the international business arena while
to referring the Tata Group of companies with South Africa being the focus country and where Tata
decided to venture internationally.
Part 1: Tata Group Analysis
Question 1:
Tata Group is an international enterprise headquartered in Mumbai India. The group operates in
more than 100 countries across the world and has over 100 independent companies that are fully
operational. Tata Africa Holdings is a subsidiary of Tata Group founded in 1994 with Johannesburg as
the centre of the company’s operations in Africa. It supports several business activities in the region
and has a significant presence in more than 11 countries on the African continent. Tata Africa Holdings
has the responsibility of identifying and creating business opportunities as well as endorsing projects
for the Tata Group in Africa. The Tata Group during April 2006 identified South Africa as a
significant development region in its plans to increase the operations of the company globally. The
group pumped millions of dollars and opened their regional headquarters in Johannesburg. The primary
interests in the South African market were IT services, telecoms, bus body building as well as the
distribution of motor vehicles. Tata has a computer group in South Africa which has been performing
marvellously in the last ten years. As a result of the country’s successful venture in South Africa, Tata
Group opened up its motor dealerships in other African countries beginning with the immediate
neighbours to South Africa i.e. Namibia, Lesotho, and Namibia.

Tata Group’s status in South Africa can be analysed using the location theory of multinational
