Yahoo was once a giant in the internet world, experiencing rapid growth and soaring stock prices after being founded in 1994. But currently Yahoo is struggling against fierce competitors such as Google and Facebook. It was clear to their Board of Directors and shareholders that radical change was necessary in order for Yahoo to remain competitive. In 2012 former Google executive Marissa Mayer was named as the new CEO.

Since joining Yahoo, Mayer has not been shy or hesitant about bringing about change. This has included the purchase of over 20 companies, banning teleworking, strict new hiring policies, and clashes with other senior executives and shareholders. The results so far have been mixed, with some observers saying her hard-nosed approach is what is needed for a struggling company like Yahoo and others saying that her style is overbearing and unnecessarily harsh.

First, carefully review the four background readings on change-oriented leadership with close attention to the definitions of transformational, transactional, and charismatic leadership. You need to apply these definitions when writing your paper. Then do some research on Marissa Mayer and her approach to managing change. Marissa Mayer’s approach to leadership can be described as transformational. This is
seen from the measures Marissa takes when she takes over leadership at Yahoo.
Transformational leadership is described as leadership in which a leader motivates workers to
produce great results while at the time changing the systems of the organization. Such leaders
have the desire to lead and look to producing leaders out of workers.
This relates to Marissa Mayer’s way of leading because it is stated that she started to
focus on changing the organizational culture of yahoo as soon as she took over. Yahoo had a
bureaucratic culture at the time she took over as CEO. Bureaucratic culture as it should be noted
is not the best an organization can have mainly because of its rigidity. It does not encourage
innovation which slows down growth of an organization, which was part of what ailed the
organization. Changing this culture therefore served to motivate workers to produce because it
encourages innovation, which is a factor of growth.
Transformational leadership involves change. Marissa required new people for key posts
in the organization. This would mean doing away with those who were present. Bringing in new
people for key posts means change. She started initiatives to reduce bureaucracies which is also
part of the positive change.
