Sex – biologically defined as either of two main categories (female and male) into which human
beings are usually divided on basis of their reproductive functions.
Gender – biologically defined as the state of being female or male – used with reference to
cultural and social differences.
Sexuality – an individual’s sexual preferences or orientation
Essentially, gender refers to the hugely shared sets of norms and expectations that are linked to
how men and women, boys and girls should behave. Dissimilar to sex, which usually refers to
the physiological and biological characteristics that define women and men, gender is usually
used to referring to the socially constructed behaviors, roles, attributes and activities that are
assigned to women and men in society. It should be noted that these said expectation s are
continually being reinforced and constructed through economic, political and social
relationships.
