Running Head: PERSONAL INTERVIEW Personal Interview Brandi Williams Florida Atlantic University 26 March 2017 1 PERSONAL INTERVIEW 2 Personal Interview Introduction In this interview, I chose to interview an African American. African Americans have been at the center of discrimination in the United States of recent. African Americans are the most discriminated group in the United States. African Americans are racially discriminated and have led to devastating consequences (Bazan, 2015). The discrimination resulted in the formation of the Black Lives Matter movement to fight against racism. Several African Americans had been killed by their race creating an outrage amongst the citizens. The movement gained momentum quickly as the police at this point were the oppressors involved in the killings. Therefore, it was these occurrences and situation affecting the minorities which led me to interview an African American. Background To formulate good questions, I had to understand the history and current issues affecting African Americans. Therefore, different sources were utilized so as to have a broader understanding of the minority group and the best questions to ask. For the history, I used books that talk about slavery and racism against African Americans. It helped give me an insight of issues that African Americans have experienced as minorities in the country (Feagin & Bennefield, 2014). News articles assisted in understanding the current situation as well as some historical occurrences that were relevant. The information was helpful in carrying out the interview and interacting with the interviewee. Interview Report PERSONAL INTERVIEW 3 Demographics The interview was conducted on a thirty-year-old African American male. He is an American citizen born in the United States by American parents. The interviewee had no disabilities. However, he had several identifiers. The thirty-year-old man had a mother, wife and a two-year-old daughter. The family of three lives together in a medium sized house enough to accommodate them with enough space. They live in a community mostly dominated by African Americans with the other group being the minority Latino community. Family The interviewee is a plumber working for a local contractor in the area. He is the breadwinner for his mother, wife, and children. His wife works at a local primary school to add more money that can help in the family's upkeep. He has some relatives living nearby interacts with them often. They support each other in times of need and the interviewee states that it’s necessary for their survival in the harsh conditions they live in. Other than that, the interviewee has many friends most of whom were brought up together in the same neighborhood. Traditions The interviewee and most of his friends are Roman Catholics, one of the majority Christian denominations in the area. The respondent was brought up in a Christian setting and Christian values which have helped him become what he is. His father was inspirational and was one of the key figures in ensuring that his family followed Christian values of life. His father died in a car accident when he 20 years old. He is the second born of a family of three though the other two siblings do not live in the area. Most of the people around him are religious with a mix of Catholics and Protestants. The other religion represented in the area is Islam with several PERSONAL INTERVIEW 4 followers. There is a combination of other religions as well as non-religious people that also live in the area. However, they coexist peacefully, and there have been no religious tussles noticed in the neighborhood by the interviewee. Experience The interviewee states that he has been discriminated but not oppressed racially. The employee reports that he and his family and friends have had to deal with a lot of racism in the area. The police are the main culprits that have discriminated the interviewee, his family, and friends. He gives an example of when he was arrested while walking back home from work. He has been arrested several times without committing any offense. At all times, he says that some of the arrests were violent even after he submitted and allowed the police to take him. The interviewee also states that he has seen most of his friends get arrested for absolutely no charges. They are later released, and they can do nothing to stand up against such treatment. The interviewee further states that he has faced discrimination at the place of work. He has been denied employment many times despite him being qualified to do the job. He further states that people are not comfortable while working at their homes like they are with his white counterparts. At times, he has had customers cancel their contracts after seeing that he is a person of color. He further elaborates that he gets the same reactions when he visits the grocery stores or even walking in the street. There is a lot of discrimination in accessing services in the city and finds it difficult to interact with others with such discrimination going on. He has also witnessed the same happen to his close friends as well as relatives. Arrests in the area are common with the targets being African Americans. Most of his friends have been in PERSONAL INTERVIEW 5 police custody at least one time though they did not commit any crimes. He states that the experience is devastating especially because his daughter can see and hear about it. Coping Strategies The method used for coping is proactive coping. It allows people to detect, interpret and prepare for any stressors that may occur in their life. Racism occurs almost every day, and the method tries to make sure that the interviewee is ready. They can anticipate what is coming and how they will face the situation. Attitude towards Oppressors The interviewee stated that they have a neutral; attitude towards their oppressors. The police are important in their daily lives. They also need food supplies as well as maintain peace. Therefore, they try to have a neutral attitude towards their oppressors and let the court of laws take over the issue. Through such an attitude, they can remain peaceful. Violence can be devastating to both parties, and the interviewee says that they try to ignore any racist discrimination they see. Conclusion Racism is an issue that affects the whole world. In the United States, African-Americans face more racism than any other minority group in the country. I got the chance to interview an African American to elaborate on their life in the country. Through the interview, I was able to learn about their culture. I believe that I have asked all the right questions and that the feedback would be valuable. At certain times after getting to the discrimination part, there were a lot of PERSONAL INTERVIEW tensions building up. However, I was able to remain calm and seek clarification from the material that I had accessed earlier. 6 PERSONAL INTERVIEW 7 References Bazan, J. (2015). Comparing and Contrasting my Life Experiences with those of my Interviewee’s Life
Experiences
Since the dawn of the American republic, both African and Native Americans have
experienced different levels of hardships. These difficulties have manifested themselves as the
country grows with significant changes being witnessed across the state. However, these
experiences vary depending on where one was born as well as the environment in which an
individual is subjected into. Thus, research has shown that during the early years the southern
plantation owners had held the black community into slavery while the greedy American settlers
stole land that belonged to the Indian community (Hall et al., 2016). This oppressive culture has
taken it is tool even in the present day America as outlined in my interview with African America.
A comparison and contrast of the cultures can be drawn along the lines of family background,
demographics as well as traditions.
From my interviewee life experiences, it can be seen that the introduction of the African
American culture has been deprived their rights for a...
