Description

1. The Cold War and America (graded)

How did the Cold War affect the social and political climate in the United States during the 1950s? In particular, how do you explain McCarthyism and the Red Scare? Can you think of any modern parallels to these events, when fear and paranoia threatened basic American liberties?

Welcome to Week 7! Exactly what is McCarthyism? How and why did the term originate?

2. Terrorism in the 21st Century (graded)

The global Cold War seems to have been replaced with something called a War on Terrorism. Do you agree that the world is at war? If so, who exactly is the "enemy" and how can they be defeated? And why is it centered in the Middle East?

This war is very different from any we've fought before. Is it winnable?

consolidate its position as a world superpower by actively contributing to the elimination of
terror aspects in the nation as well as worldwide. The terror acts that occurred in 9/11 led to calls
for retaliation from the US, and they have systematically targeted terrorist elements in the
Middle East. The war on terror is unique because the terrorist elements are not only found in one
