Description

For this Assignment, you will continue your practice as a critical consumer of research. You will critically evaluate a scholarly article related to one-way ANOVA testing.

To prepare for this Assignment:

  • Use the Course Guide and Assignment Help found in this week’s Learning Resources and search for a quantitative article related to one-way ANOVA testing.

For this Assignment:

Write a 2- to 3-page critique of the article you found. In your critique, include responses to the following:

  • Why did the authors use this one-way ANOVA test?
  • Do you think it’s the most appropriate choice? Why or why not?
  • Did the authors display the data?
  • Does the results table stand-alone (i.e., are you able to interpret the study from it?) Why or why not?

Use proper APA format, citations, and referencing.

ONE WAY ANOVA IN PRACTICE

The scholarly article selected for critique for this assignment is one by Sow (2014). The
topic for research is ‘Using ANOVA to Examine the Relationship between Safety & Security
and Human Development’. The research question is, ‘Does a statistically significant relationship
exist between safety and security index and human development?’ (Sow, 2014). The null
hypothesis is ‘There is no statistically significant relationship between safety and security index
and human development index’ while the alternative hypothesis is ‘There is a statistically
significant relationship between safety and security index and human development index’ (Sow,
2014). A total of 53 countries in Africa were the sample for this study. The results indicated a
statistically significant relationship between safety and security index and human development
with a strong effect size which brought forth the conclusion that African countries have to
address the safety and security issues if they are to experience sustainable human development
and growth. The context of the study is the manner in which organizations address the human
development aspects of their employees (Sow, 2014). If employees are guaranteed safety at the
workplace, coupled with economic and health safety, then the turnover rate is most likely going
to significantly decrease as a result of increased employee satisfaction.
The authors used the one-way ANOVA test because they were examining the relationship
between the independent and dependent variable by comparing the mean of human development
between two groups within the safety and security index variable (Sow, 2014). The participants
in the study were divided into two groups according to how they scored the independent variable.
The means of the two groups were then compared to that of human development (Sow, 2014).
Those that scored the safety and security index below the mean were grouped as the ‘Low SS’
group while those that scored higher were grouped in the ‘High SS’ group (Sow, 2014). SS
stands for Safety and Security index (Sow, 2014).

I believe ANOVA was the most appropriate choice for this analysis because it is the only
procedure that is able to tell the difference between human development levels in the two groups.
A t-test is not appropriate in this case because it cannot get the difference in more than two
groups. ANOVA compares and analyses the variance estimates in the two groups to establish
whether there is a significant difference in the human development within the groups
(Trumpower & Atas, 2014). One way ANOVA is also a parametric test, which means it is more
powerful as it can control type one errors through post hoc testing while at the same time
providing the overall group means test of equality (Trumpower & Atas, 2014).
The authors did not display the raw data. They displayed a summary of the descriptive
statistics table to show how the data was distributed. The table indicated the minimum and
