Penicillin Antibiotics
Penicillins are one of the oldest groups of antibiotics used today in medicine. First
discovered in 1928 by Alexander Flemming, this family of drugs is still used today to treat
a variety of infections. All penicillins share the same molecular feature of a beta-lactam
ring that carries a secondary amino group. Because of this molecular similarity, penicillins
have the same mechanism of action; they inhibit the transpeptidation step in bacterial cell
wall synthesis. This step is essential for bacterial structure because it gives the cell wall
rigidity that prevents cellular lysis.
