Gun Control
Gun control has been a major issue all over the world. Violence is experienced in many
places globally, and it seems that people are more inclined towards revenge that proper conflict
resolution. Insecurity has also increased all over the world. As a result, more and more people
resolve to own guns believing that they will be able to solve these issues by themselves. This has
led to the increased number of guns that are owned by individuals other than the state issued
service weapons. Gun control is thought to be a necessary option to keep the usage and
ownership of guns in control as a way of dealing with criminal activities although many doubt
this is the way to restore security.
One of the many reasons as to why firearms need to be controlled has been said to be the
control of criminal activity in the community. Nonetheless, there are some that believe that a
criminal will still find other weapons to use if there is no gun. Therefore, the elimination of guns
in the community would not deal with the situation (Chemerinsky 477). Apparently, there are
many factors that come to play when an individual chooses to use a gun and commit a crime. In
order to determine whether the control of gun ownership would help stem criminal activity,
research needs to be conducted on how many crimes and murders would have been averted if
there was no gun that was immediately available for use. This is whether it was owned by the
HU2
criminal or the victim. According to Wasike even if the gun was not available, most offenders
would still use another weapon to accomplish their criminal activity (182). This demerits the
inception of gun control laws.
Statistics have it that gun control has not been conducted evenly. For example, gun
control in the US alone is not standardized in all the states. There are some that are more
stringent than others. For instance, there are some states that do not ask for registration when
selling guns. Others do not limit the number of guns that one person can purchase. However,
there are some like California, South Carolina, and Maryland which have a “one gun a month”
rule (Hamilton and Augustine 86). Interestingly, this is still quite flexible. Meaning you could
purchase 12 guns a year and still be within the legal limit. In some states, gun traders do not have
to ask for registration or license when selling assault firearms.
There are some that believe gun control to be an effective method of stemming crime.
Specifically, they are of the idea that if background checks are done, then the issue would be
resolved greatly and guns would not end up in the wrong hands. There are research studies which
have been conducted and reached a conclusion that when background checks are conducted, gun
violence can be reduced significantly (Miller, Lisa and Deborah). According to Miller, Lisa and
Deborah, a 45% decline in the number of reported gun homicides as well as a 15% decline in the
number of suicides were reported when a law was enacted in Connecticut on background checks.
The law required the applicants to acquire a permit before being allowed to own a gun. The
permit would only be issued after a background check was conducted. In this context, gun
control turned out to be a good solution to the vice.

As far as gun control is concerned, we can also learn from the recent events associated
with shootings. Although there is scholarly evidence that gun control is working, the actual
situation on the ground says otherwise. Sadly enough, evidence has it that mostly of the recent
shootings were done using guns that were purchased by people who had passed background
checks in the first place. More importantly, these events are an indicator that there are loopholes
when it comes to the background checking system that is in place. Evidently, it is not efficient
enough. For instance, the then FBI Director James Comey, noted that Dylann Roof should not
have been issued with a gun (Miller, Lisa and Deborah). Dylann should not have passed the
background check. This mistake led to the loss of nine lives in a South Carolina church.
As far as statistics are concerned, it is not possible to have accurate figures of the people
that have obtained guns without having to undergo a background check. Nonetheless,
estimations can be made of the same. Using data from 2004, it was noted that around 18% of all
gun related transactions were conducted by friends, relatives and private sellers (Miller, Lisa and
Deborah). As a result, all these transactions are presumed to have been conducted without proper
background checks. Sadly enough, majority of these sellers were not authorized dealers in the
first place.
Gun control can be accomplished through proper legislation, background checks and
registration of the firearms. It has been recommended that the registration of guns be done
straight from the time when the gun leaves the manufacturers warehouse. Notably, there has not
been proper registration and record keeping of the ownership of guns. And no background
checks are conducted before sale of these guns. As such, when the police and law enforcement
agencies want to trace a crime gun, they often lose track of the guns records after the first sale.
Usually, subsequent sales are not recorded thoroughly and are often off the book sales.
