An integrated approach leans six Sigma & risk management in the entertainment industry
purpose of the study
The study aims to find out how six Sigma can be beneficial in improving profits and
customer satisfaction in the entertainment and media industry. The entertainment industry is one
of the industries that generate a lot of revenue and has high risks at the same time. Consequently,
there is a need to reduce these risks and continue maximizing profits. Six Sigma is a business
strategy that entails integrating certain tools to detect risks and provides solutions on how to
minimize them. Over the years, employees in the entertainment industry, especially those acting
and performing acrobats, have been involved in accidents during their line of duty.
Consequently, this research was carried out to find out ways and strategies that can be
implemented to reduce the number of accidents happening in the industry. The study was also
conducted to test if lean sigma principles motivate employees to give their best. This is because
it was stipulated that coming up with strategies to reduce accidents motivates workers. Lastly,
this research was also done to test if the image of the media industry will improve after the
implementation of lean six Sigma. This objective was suggested due to most media personalities'
bad image and how many people viewed media industry jobs.
Methodology
The researcher used Microsoft networks software to analyze data regarding different
kinds of risks experienced in the media industry, after which he applied DMAIC philosophy. The
DMAIC philosophy has four stages; define, measure, analyze, improve and control.
Define
The problem under investigation in the media industry was that the chances of occurrence
of accidents and risks were high. The high probability of risks and accidents leads to the creation
3
of an uncertain working environment for the workers. Since nothing was being done to correct
the uncertainty, workers become less motivated to work leading to a decrease in production.
Measure
The measuring stage had three vital parts; data collection, evaluation of the collected data
and lastly, failure modes and effect analysis. Primary data was sourced from face-to-face
interviews, while secondary data was sourced from already done scientific research findings. A
data collection plan was used to ensure that no vital data was omitted and to avoid the collection
of unnecessary data. It included the possible types of hazards and the annual frequency of the
hazards happening.
Analyze phase
In analyzing the collected data, the researcher used the Pareto chart and root cause
analysis. A Pareto chart shows the cumulative impact and how often defects occur. This chart
has an 80/20 rule, also known as the law of the vital few and trivial many. This rule means that in
the case of many events,20% of the causes are responsible for 80% of the outcomes. In this case,
the 20% represented fire, manual handling set design, working at height, strobe light and storage.
For the root cause analysis researcher plotted cause and effect graphs for electrical hazards, the
fire caused hazards, smoke and vapor led hazards, smoke strobe lighting hazards and
pyrotechnics hazards.
Improvement phase
The researcher concluded several suggestions to better the existing system.
An analysis of the whole system should be done. The system constraints have to be identified.
Major emphasis should be made to determine the barriers to an efficient system, and analysis of
having to receive them should be done.
4
Control phase
The researcher gave different suggestions to lower the probability of different hazards
happening. In conclusion, this research is relevant for our study since it shows how lean six
Sigma has been previously used to detect and lower risks in the media industry.

An Insight into Risk Identification, Quality and Productivity Enhancement using Six
Sigma
purpose of the study
In the recent past, most companies have begun implementing lean six Sigma with the aim
of improving productivity and profits. Most of these companies have benefited from lean six
strategies, while other companies have not benefited. Consequently, this research paper gives a
critical analysis of the sigma tools, techniques and applications that companies have been using
to minimize risks, motivate employees and in improvin...
