Description

You will write the first part of your research and/or EBP practice change proposal.

As you learned from the first week’s readings, a well-constructed proposal is required to obtain approval to complete a project or conduct research.

A proposal describes the project in detail to include: the purpose, the significance, the state of the literature on the topic, the research design, methods, participant recruitment and protection, and how you will analyze the data gathered during the project itself.

You are not conducting the project in this course.  You are developing the proposal to submit to the IRB. The introduction is the first part of the EBP proposal.

Please follow the assignment guidelines below.

Assignment Guidelines

1. Complete all the required readings for Week 1.

2. In the discussion forum for week 1, you identified a nursing problem or area of interest that you will focus on for your evidence-based proposal and you have formulated the research question that you will be a part of your project throughout this course.

RESEARCH PROJECT TOPIC PROPOSAL EVIDENCE BASED PRACTICE(EBP) PREVENTINE PRESSURE ULCERS IN THE GERIATRIC POPULATION

The research topic that interests me is the Preventing Pressure Ulcers in the geriatric population for those that are 65 years or older, which has becoming increasingly prevalent in the healthcare setting where these pressure ulcers cause death because of poor management. Each year, more than 2.5 million people in the United States develop pressure ulcers. These skin lesions bring pain, associated risk for serious infection, and increased health care utilization. Pressure ulcers are associated with longer hospital stays and increased morbidity and mortality. They also remain a serious problem despite regulatory and market approaches to encourage prevention and treatment. About 60,000 patients die as a direct result of a pressure ulcer each year.

PICOT Question: In older adults aged 65 years old with pressure ulcers, is the Braden scale an appropriate tool of utilization necessary to assess risk of skin breakdown, compared to a non-standardized assessment tool for skin breakdown in older adults upon 24 hours of admission?

 3. Using the information from discussion forum 1 (as described above), you are to write the introduction to your EBP proposal.

You will include:

-The purpose of your EBP project in either a question or statement format (Review PowerPoint from week 1 reading)

- A detailed description of why your project is important.  Include the background and clinical significance of the question or the problem.

You will support the background and significance of the topic with evidence from current nursing articles, textbooks, or websites (current within 5 years).

-A well-structured PICOT question is included reflecting the foundation of the proposal.

EVIDENCE BASED PRACTICE PROPOSAL INTRODUCTION

Introduction
Purpose of the EBP Project
The purpose of this evidence-based practice project is to shed light on the ways through
which pressure ulcers can be prevented among the geriatric population. Pressure ulcers continue
to remain a major healthcare problem affecting close to 2.5 million people in the United States.
Current data indicates that in 1993, pressure ulcers were noted in 280,000 hospital stays and 11
years later, the number had increased to 430,000 (Nadukkandiyil et al., 2020). According to the
Healthcare Cost and Utilization Project (HCUP) report, between 1993 and 2003 there was a 63%
increase in pressure ulcers among older adults. This number has since doubled in less than 20
years later. In this case, there is a critical need to come up with essential ways through hospitals
and other homecare facilities can help prevent the escalating number of pressure ulcers among
the elderly population. In this case, this project presents evidence-based practices that can foster
the knowledge of healthcare workers and patients on how they can minimize incidences of
pressure ulcers within their primary care facilities.
Importance of the project
Background
Pressure ulcers are costly with an average charge per stay of $37,800 (Burn et al., 2018).
The problem also continues to increase within the primary care setting and this is a point of
concern among health care workers. It has one of the highest occurrence rates along with failure
to rescue and post-operate respiratory failure. For this case, preventing pressure ulcers remains
one of the major nursing concerns owing to the belief that pressure ulcers are visible marks of
caregiver sin that is associated with poor or insufficient nursing care. However, most clinicians

believe that pressure ulcer development is not the fault of the nursing care but rather the entire
healthcare system. Nonetheless, this project addresses the entire spectrum and provides critical
recommendations on how pressure ulcers can be prevented among elderly patients within
primary care (Sharp, Moore & McLaws, 2019). The importance of this project is therefore
perceived in terms of reduction in healthcare costs associated with long hospital stays as well as
a reduction in morbidity and mortality rates associated with pressure ulcers.
Clinical significance
The prevention of pressure ulcers is a multifaceted approach that requires
multidisciplinary collaboration. However, this project has a clinical significance in the sense that
it provides alternative options and strategies that nursing care can integrate to foster the
prevention of pressure ulcers within the primary care setting. On the same note, the project sheds
light on the current state of the problem of pressure ulcers among the elderly population using
current and relevant data. This information has clinical significance since it will inform the
actions and decisions o...
