Analysis of a Problem
Introduction
In the contemporary society, the speech delivered by King is still important. The
speech helped to shape the civil right movement in American society. Before the speech was
delivered, the American society for Africa American was a hell to live. The African
American, especially in the Southern American, was being dehumanized because of their
color. Essentially, an African American was being denied to enjoy social amenities just as
compared to White Americans (Wright). African was perceived as aliens who were straining
the resources. African-American existence in the American was seen as a bad omen. The
atrocities that African American passed forced King to coin and deliver the speech with an
intention averting to the existing status quo.
This will majorly focus on analyzing the mass media reception to the speech, critics,
effects of the speech to the modern society, and the general receptions of the speech in the
public. The paper will be structured into the perspective section, analysis section, implication,
and assessment section (Wright). The perspective section will mainly concentrate on the
analysis of literature view and essentially what the critics say about the paper. The analysis
section will encompass the interpretation of the existing artifacts, society perception towards

the speech, and future of the speech. The implications and assessment section will entail the
analysis of ethical, effectiveness, and artistic perspective of the speech.
The essence of this paper is to examine the rhetoric problem experienced by Martin
Luther in trying to fight for the civil rights of the African-American. The paper constitutes an
in-depth analysis of the time, location, and the date the speech was delivered. In addition, it
encompasses the evaluation of the social, economic, and political aspects of the rhetorical
situation.
The paper touch on the aftermath of the speech as well as initial situation before the
speech was delivered. After and before the delivery of the speech, MARTIN LUTHER KING
faced numerous challenges. For instance, many people misunderstood him as fighting for
only the African-Americans and ignore the white people (Younge). There are so many
misconceptions about the speech delivered by Martin. Despite receiving so many accolades,
he was branded, opportunist and alienator.
Martin Luther King was born in 1929. His past life was full of challenges. In 1968, he
was assassinated for agitating for the rights of the Americans. The dead of Martin sparks
many demonstrations in the US and especially Chicago (Kuypers). The demonstration
contributed to the death of more than 350 people. After the death of Martin, what he was
fighting for came to a halt. The progress of fighting for equally slowed.
He was a Baptist minister and a civil right activist (Ilya). When he was an activist,
King gathered all the leaders especially from the region of South America to end legal
segregation which was orchestrated by the white to the African-American. His magnificent
achievement in fighting against legal segregation becomes one of his greatest contributions to
the American society.

Martin was an eloquent speaker and full of charisma. He was deeply rooted in the
fight against the segregation, discrimination, and inequality for all the people of the America
(Dugan). His spirited efforts enable him to earn a lot of respect from any people. His success
in the fight for justice for all made him the target among the conservative who wanted to
maintain the status-quo.
Despite preaching for equality for all in the American society, some people were
against his speech. Other people term him as ego-centric and fighting for his political
ambitions (Wright). Lack of recognition especially from the white people was very
detrimental for him. In addition, Martin was also betrayed in the fight for civil rights. Some
of the people move to file lawsuits to challenge his speech as biased and only targeting a
specific group of people.
Perspective Section
The speech delivered by King received a lot of attention from the media, critics, and
the general population. The speech by the Martin Luther King was delivered at a time when
African-Americans face inequality and discrimination. The period between the 1950s and
1970s was extremely hard time for African-Americans (Wright). The African-Americans
were mainly segregated because of their skin color. The state had set up laws that
discriminate people in places of schools, hotels, and restaurant. The speech delivered by Dr.
Martin was the turning points in the fight for civil rights of the black in the United States.
The speech was delivered by Martin Luther King (MLK) at the Lincoln Memorial in
Washington, D.C. In his speech, King fought for a society where a black and a white child
peacefully coexist as well as a society where children of slave-owners and children of former
slaves would live together (News). Martin calls for an active movement of his audience,

urging them to take action in the fight for equality. The speech delivered by King was
intended to spark change through mobilizing them to fight for their right.
Despite receiving the good receptions, many of the prominent democrats were against
the speech delivered by Martin Luther King. Strom Thurmond, senator for South Carolina
states that African-Americans are better clothed, better fed and better housed in American as
compared to those living in other parts of the world. He added that no one has been deprived
freedom to enjoy rights in the American society rather than all people is sharing equal rights.
The negative perception towards the speech was because he was thinking that AfricanAmerican was demanding more on a society they are aliens. Many African Americans were
being denied most of their rights. This move was not democratic at all. This is why Martin
Luther King stepped up, with other democrats to fight for these rights.
Russell Long, senator of Louisiana states that the push for equality by the AfricanAmerican was a clear violation of rights of business owners. Long states that, "Now what I as
a Southerner plan to fight for is the right of a man to select the neighbors among whom he
will live, the right to decide who he's going to trade with, who he's going to do business with,
who he's going to associate with," Here, he implies that there is no need of competition in the
society.
The speech was disseminated via radio and was later printed in magazines and
newspapers all over the US, and other parts of the world. The printing reaches many people
in parts of the world (Ling). The speech sparks civil rights movement in the US who
demanded equality for all the people. The speech not only motivated people to unite towards
one course but also enables Americans to have an opportunity to forward their grievances.
The speech is also used as a reference or quoted directly to address any democratic rights or
