Describe the process and importance of independent assortment and crossing over in meiosis.

Crossing over:

  • Produces more genetic variety by recombination of the traits within individual chromosomes
  • During synapsis, (the part of prophase I where the DNA becomes visible as X's), homologous chromosomes pair forming linked chromsomes (the X is linked to its homolog)
  • Portions of non-sister chromatids overlap, break at chiasmata (the point of linkage on the chromosome), reattach to new chromatid in a system of reciprocal exchange

There is now a new unique genetic make up within the cell with new combinations of chromosomes that are known as recombinants 

Mendel’s law of independent assortment = two or more pairs of alleles assort independently of one another during gamete formation.

Relationship between Mendel’s law of independent assortment and meiosis

  • Mendel’s law of independent assortment applies only to traits carried on different chromosomes, i.e.unlinked genes
  • independent assortment occurs as a result of the alignment of homologs during metaphase I, determining which maternal and paternal chromosomes assort to each daughter cell

each pair of alleles separates independently of every other pair of unlinked alleles
