Description

Step 1

Select two threats. Listed below are eight issues that the UN feels pose the most significant threats to global security. Some of these apply to the Earth’s 7.7 billion people, while others are limited primarily to developing countries. Regardless of where these threats are concentrated, your job as a consultant is to identify two of them that you consider the most critical to the globe’s population.

Issue Options
  1. The use of fossil fuels as an energy source.
  2. Globalization.
  3. Insufficient educational opportunities in developing countries.
  4. A lack of access to technology.
  5. Civil war (NOT the U.S. Civil War).
  6. The rise in oceans’ levels.
  7. Covid-19 and the global pandemic.
  8. The dangers of poor countries remaining poor.
Step 2

Write a minimum of an 8 page persuasive paper about your two threats.

Write an introduction paragraph of at least one-half page in length identifying the two threats you have selected and the purpose of the paper. Then, for the two threats you chose:

  1. Identify the factors that make it such a serious risk to the global environment that you would choose to present it to the UN.
  2. Analyze the role that humans have played in aggravating this threat to the Earth’s environment.
  3. Suggest initiatives that the global community can take to mitigate the worst effects of this environmental threat.

Threats to the Globe’s Environment and Population
The globe’s population continuously faces threats that could adversely affect the
environment and easily wipe out a significant part of the population. The threats vary to a
different degree and each affects the globe’s population differently; some, for example, have
immediate effects while others take a long time to manifest. It is thus important to study and
assess the potential threats in order to understand them, and possibly offer solutions that can
help mitigate the dangers posed. For purposes of this study, we will look at two potential
threats that pose the greatest risk to Earth’s environment and the current global population.
The two threats are the use of fossil fuels as an energy source and the Covid-19 global
pandemic. By studying and understanding the two issues, as well as the role that humans
have played in aggravating the threats, we hope to offer solutions that could help mitigate the
worst effects to the environment and human population.
Burning fossil fuels has both short and long effects to the global population, while
Covid-19 has more immediate effects. Combining the two threats, aggravates the situation,
exponentially increasing destruction of the environment and loss of human life.
Covid-19 and the global pandemic
Covid-19, while a relatively new threat, has grown to become one of the most potent
risks to human population in the recent past. In slightly over a year, the pandemic has ravaged
all parts of the globe, bringing to a halt a lot of the basic freedoms that we enjoyed. Millions
have directly been affected by the pandemic, with over 4.5 million deaths reported globally.
In the US alone, nearly 700 thousand deaths have been reported since the first case of covid19 was reported in March 2020 (World Health Organization, 2021). Disruptions to global
trade and travel, among other normal daily activities have adversely affected many more with
people. Millions have lost their jobs and as a result reduced the quality of life and their ability
to meet their basic needs, especially in the least developed parts of the world. The indirect

effects, such as mental health challenges, of the pandemic cannot be quantified due to
difficulties in recording these events (ILO, FAO, IFAD, & WHO, 2020).
Factors that make it such a serious risk to the global population
The main factor that contributes to make Covid-19 particularly a serious risk to
human population relates to how it is spread. Covid-19 is an airborne disease that is easily
spread when one comes in contact with an infected person or breaths in contaminated air. As
a consequence, it is quite easy for one to get infected. Even when one takes precautions, such
as wearing face masks, there is no guarantee that one is safe. Many people that have been
infected thus far, cannot identify the exact time they got exposed to the virus (World Health
Organization, 2020). As a consequence, it becomes relatively impossible to manage the
spread of the pandemic, without infringing on people’s freedoms of association and
movement.
Another factor that contributes to the risk is the rate at which the virus is able to
mutate, thus making it relatively impossible to find a cure. Since the virus was first reported,
more than half a dozen new variants of the virus has been reported. The variants are often
more lethal, spread easier and less responsive to available care regiments and drugs
(Bollinger & Ray, 2021). As a consequence, more people experience more severe s...
