This headquarters is the birthplace of the megastore. However, Walmart has extended its operations into twenty-four countries (Walmart U.S., n.d.). Walmart has established itself as one of the largest retailers over the years. It attributes this achievement to its supply chain management. Walmart strives to increase productivity while lowering production costs. In the operation locations, Walmart adopted the following four strategies. Firstly, Walmart uses the strategy of expanding all its distribution centers. Walmart has expanded around these centers to ensure it captures new markets in new geographical locations (Natto, 2014). When seeking to enter a new market, Walmart ensures it settles on the areas that can create several new stores and not just one store. When it finally finds such a geographical location, it begins by building a new distribution location and opening the first store. The distribution center acts as a bridgehead for all the supply chain activities within the location. Also, the distribution center facilitates the opening of new stores within the new territory.  Walmart uses the ‘big box store format (Natto, 2014; LeCavalier, 2016). This strategy involves combining the warehouse with the stores. The resultant single facility facilitates the operational efficiencies for this megastore. As the name suggests, the big box can contain any inventory size like most of the warehouses would do. The store and the warehouse being in the same location means a lot to the retailer and the customers. There are no wastes associated with unnecessary movements as the inventory is in the same place as the actual store from where the customers would get them (Natto, 2014). The ‘big box’ promotes efficiency as the products will not have to be moved to the stores whenever they are depleted because they are already there. More importantly, having everything in the big box means no additional costs are involved in moving the products between two locations.  Walmart depends on the electronic data interchange when working with the suppliers (Hugos, 2018). Based on the electronic data interchange, Walmart can easily cut costs for ordering and paying the product invoices. The distribution centers use this technology for efficiency and productivity. Another role of the electronic data interchange is the extent of control and coordination. Walmart relies on this technology to schedule and subsequently receive the products as scheduled. Therefore, Walmart has kept a steady flow of products within its supply chain. The suppliers can easily manage time and the distribution centers using this technology to ensure accuracy and precision in all the activities. Also, Walmart uses the vendor-managed inventory system to allow suppliers to manage their inventories. The shared database is used to monitor the level of inventory by each supplier and manufacturers.  Another aspect that Walmart does well is the lower prices. All the Walmart stores attract price-conscious customers. This strategy works for Walmart as it convinces customers that they need not visit stores other than Walmart for the best prices.
