From a behavioral perspective, actions are considered a product of life’s experiences and
not pathological forces. Abnormality is therefore considered a behavioral pattern an individual
develops that is maladaptive. All behavior is considered learning from the environment; nurture.
Learnt behavior can also be unlearnt. This is the principle that guides treatment of abnormal
behavior. Behavioral perspective emphasizes the manner in which abnormal behavior was learnt
and the environment, through social learning, operant conditioning, and classical conditioning
(Dozois, 2015).
In relation to social learning, the society is said to give deviant maladaptive models
which children associate with and imitate. In the movie American Psycho, Patrick Bateman is
seen to imitate the films he watches on the television. When he was calling Dorsia Restaurant to
make a reservation, his television was showing a sensual film that involved two women and a
man. Eventually, this is what Bateman did. He hires two call girls and goes to do what he saw on
the film while recording it. In another instance, Bateman is doing his morning exercise and on
his screen is a horror film showing a man with a chainsaw while a woman is screaming in the
background. Later, he chases down one of the call girls, Christie, with a chainsaw and kills her
(Harron et al., 2000). Bateman abnormal psychology is evidently a product of his social learning.
For a therapist to be able to treat Patrick Bateman from a behavioral perspective, his
mode of learning the abnormal behavior must be established. First, the videos that he watches
contribute significantly to his behavioral development. The therapist should then provide him
