Please post three topics you think you would like to present on during the semester. After the focus of the presentation, please write an academic question you would like to try to answer as you plan your presentation. These topics do not need to be tied to your major, but you may find it very useful to support your other studies with your research. You are not bound to these topics right now (we can talk about them and you can change them still), but take this activity seriously, we will begin work on planning presentations very soon. What is an academic question? An academic question takes time and work to begin to answer. Is "Do most people like to speak in public?" an academic question? No. It is a question we can answer with a "yes" or a "no," and the answer is pretty clear - most people do not like to speak in public. Is "What are some major reasons most people don't like to speak in public?" an academic question? Yes. We cannot answer this question with a simple response, and the question recognizes that the situation is complex and there are probably many reasons that contribute to fears of public speaking. It is difficult to create a presentation for a simple, nonacademic question, but much easier to create a presentation for a complex, academic question! Please list your topic ideas and research academic research questions in the following order: 1. The final presentation. You will write an academic paper on this topic, and this presentation will be the longest of this course. This should be a topic you are very interested in, and for which you can do a lot of research. 2. One of two shorter presentations (1 of 2). While you will not write a long paper on this topic, you will do academic research into it. This might be a topic you already know, or something new you would like to explore! 3.
