Introduction
Criminal profiling is a tool that is often used in investigative techniques to aid in solving
a crime. In order to determine how a criminal thinks involving commitment of a homicide,
interviews conducted on a sample of criminals can be obtained to find a link to behavioral
consistencies of these offenders. Experienced detectives know the proper investigative
techniques to use on an offender that has been institutionalized for committing a murder,
therefore in an experiment conducted, detectives would be useful to get the results needed for the
study conducted by myself. Evidence such as DNA from the victim is usually collected at the
scene of the crime. Other elements of profiling a criminal contains whereabouts, type of victims,
and observing of a person’s behavior can be used to positively identify a criminal. Collecting
information of similar and mysterious fashions would be used to exclude any doubt that the
evidence collected in the investigation will not convict the suspect.
Fahsing & Ask (2013) explains that even though other evidence may be helpful,
investigators like to rely on their first premise of why and how a crime was committed. For
example, if there are a number of five female victims found on the side of a road, partially
clothed, with stab wounds to their abdomen, and DNA evidence found on the victims’ body
matches a white male, the detectives would then profile a white male. This type of crime may
show that a white male victim meets his victims at night and sexually assaults them before he
kills them and dumps their bodies beside the road. The determinant factor would be that the
killers’ behavior is consistent with his crime type and victim (Mburu & Helbich, 2015). In this
experiment, the behavioral consistency will be examined to find out profiling is a valuable tool in
homicide investigations. If offender behavior is related to profiling of serial homicide offenders,
then the use of profiling as a valuable tool is necessary in homicide investigations.

Methodology of the Experiment
The participation of criminal investigators or detectives is greatly needed to perform this
experiment. The main objective would be to determine the behavioral characteristics of the
offender to the techniques of profiling of the criminal. In 2014, Oxburgh, Ost, Morris, &
Cherryman’s study on interviewing high profiled criminals determined if empathy was present in
the responses given. Investigators are one of the key ingredients in finding out if profiling is
valuable when using it in an investigation. Data will be collected from samples as a component
of research into signs of a criminal mind that work. The type of sampling that will be the most
objective for this study would be probability sampling. This type of sampling would be ideal for
studying serial homicide offenders. These samples would have committed by crimes ranging
from rape to strangulation on children. If research is used from a sample of 10 convicted serial
killers ranging in age from 30 to 62, out of 25 inmates, information can be obtained from the
minds of younger and older criminals to determine the information needed for the study. By
conducting an in-person interview, a lot of information can be obtained by how the person reacts
to questions by studying their demeanor and answers to the questions. A good way to get
information would be to go to the penitentiaries at night to interview the subject, mainly because
they may be very anxious, and want to talk at that point in time. Nighttime would be the best
time because the person would be more relaxed to talk. Questionnaires would not be a good
choice to use in this experiment because the criminal would not be truthful. Since a
questionnaire yields a set choice of answers, the criminal would easily pick the answer of their
choice, and the results would not be as accurate as word of mouth. The validity and reliability of
the information collected is very important to the outcome of the study. There would be no room
for errors in this experiment because it can determine if profiling should be continued as a form

a trial basis, until they were proven that there was a vital need to them in a police department.
