Scientists study past climate changes using different methods. Some of these methods
include the use of satellite information, instruments, historical data and environmental records.
However, the satellite and instrumental data are limited to studying climate changes that do not
exceed the 19th century with satellite covering fewer periods hence cannot be used to study
information in the past years. The study of past climate changes was studied under
paleoclimatology where different tools were used. The tree rings were among the tools that were
used. The thickness and color of tree rings portrayed a lot of information on the climate
conditions. Ice cores from the mountain tops were also used in the determination of the
temperatures over a long period of time. Ocean sediments were also used in the determination of
the temperatures, wind speed, and direction. Palynology was also another method used where the
scientists studied the fossil pollen grains contained in different date layers (Demeritt, 2006).
The greenhouse effect refers to the natural processes where the sun’s energy (sunlight)
that is radiated and reflected back to the earth surface is absorbed by greenhouse gasses such as
carbon dioxide, water vapor, methane, and other artificial chemicals so as to keep the earth
surface warm. Greenhouse gasses cause a change in climate since they determine the amount of
heat that is retained by the earth’s atmosphere. If the greenhouse effect is able to retain a lot of
heat then the earth’s atmosphere is warmer as compared to when it retains less amount of heat
hence the changes in climate. Human activities have an effect on the addition of g...
