Description

Data visualization methods offer a different landscape for explaining situations using data. Graphical representations of information, if created properly, can make vital information more intuitive, contextualized, and accessible. Visualization plays an essential part in analyzing big data and simplifying complex data-intensive scenarios.

In this discussion, using the Viz of the Day webpage, select a business-focused visualization to debate in your post (you may have to toggle to more than one page to see business-specific visualizations). Consider the audience and purpose of the visualization you selected, and think about the strategy used to present the information and analysis visually. In your initial post, make sure to include the link to the visualization you selected, and address the following:

Why have you selected this one?

How does the author of the visualization address the audience?

How is the purpose of the visualization conveyed?

  • How does the visualization use color, ordering, layout, and hierarchy to prioritize information?
  • In response to at least two of your peers, address the following:
  • Can you describe ways in which data visualizations make information more accessible to their audience? What would you recommend to make key insights in visualizations more digestible to your audience? What would you avoid?

One Peer Post:

Hello All,

The visualization I chose was titled, "What do Americans think about Abortion?" I selected this one because it has been the topic of the week, for several weeks in one of my online social groups and because I fully support a woman's right to choose what's right for her body. The visualization is broken down into four colors that represent the different opinions on what people think should be the case for an abortion. Red represents "Illegal in all circumstances," light blue representing "Legal in some cases," dark blue repping "Legal under any circumstances," and white, indicating "No opinion." The author uses both a bar and line graph to break down the percentages of each group's opinion. It is a simple layout that is easy to read and understand. The line graph with each opinion is next to each other, allowing the reader to compare the data simply without and real effort.

Why have you selected this one?

I chose the visualization “how common is your birthday”. I chose this for two reasons 1) I thought it was one of the best to look at and easiest to read and understand 2) It is a data set that everyone can relate to

How does the author of the visualization address the audience?

The author addresses the audience with a large text of the subject of the data “Birthday(s)” and then gives a small description of what the visualization is describing. Underneath that, there is a simple, yet detailed explanation of how to read the data and the anomalies.

How is the purpose of the visualization conveyed?

The purpose of the visualization is to plot birthdays by month and more specifically by day and show how common that day is compared to the other days of the year.

How does the visualization use color, ordering, layout, and hierarchy to prioritize information?

The visualization is organized by horizontal lines showing the different months vertically. Each day is then shown as a dot with the corresponding position of the day in the month vertically in the row. They then place the dot either further left (uncommon) or right (common) in the row to show the commonality. Past that, they highlight the top and bottom ten birthdays with a different color. The visualization is easy to read and labelled very well so that it is quick to understand.

Why have you selected this one?
The visual has been used to form a comparative analysis of the need for entry-level
jobs affected by different contexts depending on the field of application. The visual has been
well articulated and designed to give details about the topic being discussed. The details are
brief and precise, allowing the audience to pick insights from a glance. The visualization is
