Generally during therapy sessions when clients feel that the counselor is not effective in
addressing their problems or when the counselor is very judgmental and asks many irrelevant
questions they will not feel safe and comfortable which may make the desire to withdraw from
the therapy session and seek help elsewhere.
Strategies that can help in re-engaging a client who wants to withdraw during the
counseling session
The following are the strategies to use in order to re-engage a client who opts to withdraw
from the counseling session:
Avoid asking many unnecessary questions
As a counselor you should limit or avoid asking your client many questions, this is
because questions may remind the client of his or her previous encounter with interrogators like
the judiciary, police officers and other law enforcing officers and therefore will remind him or
her of worst moments in the past. Therapists should not only base their counseling sessions on
only on questions (Brodsky and Lichtenstein, 1999).
Avoid being so judgmental

to explain themselves before making their conclusions. This will improve clients’ comfort and

Practice empathy
When you realize that your client’s commitment during the counseling session is
