Understand that as a student in this course: ● That the material will seek to unsettle what is ‘known’ ● Understand that your perspectives and understandings of the world will be challenged. ● Expect that the class materials may be an unsettling experience for some as some deeply entrenched beliefs will be challenged. ● You are encouraged to adopt a different frame of reference as you learn from each other ● The expectation for the course is that all students participate and express themselves through their own unique social location. Discussion title: "Self Defense as a Criminal Defense " This week’s discussion aligns with the chapter objectives regarding accepted criminal defense in court. It is designed to invoke your critical think skills as you analyze the facts of the case. You were required to review the documents on the death of Trayvon Martin and the criminal defense of George Zimmerman in the Chapter Review Assignment Module. TASKS: Respond to questions below: ● Why do you think Zimmerman disregarded the dispatcher's instructions? ● Explore and critically analyze the investigation of the case? ● During the police interrogation of Zimmerman, how was his demeanor? (Things to consider: did he appear concerned, disturbed that he had just taken the life of Trayvon? Or did he appear to be calm, nonchalant, etc?) ● Do you feel that Trayvon Martin was targeted because of his race (meaning was he racially profiled?) ● Why do you feel Zimmerman was found not guilty? ● Do you think there was implicit bias on behalf of the jurors in the Zimmerman case? ● If you were a selected juror, what would be your decision in this case? Support your reasoning by citing specifics of the facts delineated in the case. Remember to start your response with an introductory paragraph highlighting the facts of the case. **The links to the documents are accessible just in case you missed them from the chapter review unit. Instructions REMEMBER that your initial response should have a minimum of 500-750 words since the discussion is worth 20 points. You must respond to the post of at least two colleagues. Expressing an opinion is not enough. You will be evaluated on the consistency and quality of your posts to the weekly discussion board. I will primarily be looking for how well you support your comments. I expect you to work to make meaning of the material of the course. I look for depth of engagement, as well as a level of critical thinking and inquiry. Success hinges on keeping up with readings, and referring to them as much as possible when you do respond. As a reminder, you are not sending out a text message or tweet, so when writing your post, use proper English, grammar, and writing mechanics. Use the "Reply" icon to start your discussion. Why do you think Zimmerman disregarded the dispatcher's instructions?
I believe Zimmerman disregarded the dispatcher’s instructions to justify his shooting.
Zimmerman could have disregarded the dispatcher if the he felt his life was danger and wanted
to protected himself. When assessing why George Zimmerman’s disrerganded the dispatcher
request of not using lethal force or engaging, one must consider the conditions in which he was
confronted with at the time (Torres, 2017). Therefore, I believe under such conditions, the
impression of danger must've been so substantial that a legitimate reason and sensible person
would've have felt that the only way to avoid the risk was to use force. According to
circumstances, George Zimmerman must have assumed the threat was real.
Explore and critically analyze the investigation of the case?
