There are federal laws that protect the interests and well-being of employee from the
employers. These federal protections include; discrimination, a safe working environment,
family leave, wages, overtime, gender rights among others.
Right against Discrimination
The Civil Rights Act of 164 prohibited discrimination in the workplaces against major
categories. It also stipulated that employees should not be discriminated by the federal or state
governments. The federal laws were very keen of the hiring of employees, evaluation of jobs,
policies in promotions, training, recruiting and compensation of employees. The federal law also
provided the employee protection by the employer through several ways. E.g Race, religion,
pregnancy, nationality, sex, disability, age and citizenship among many others. The law does not
permit harassments on the basis of color, deny employment opportunities to a potential candidate
because of the marital status or even retaliate against an employee because of filing a charge of
Wages Right
Under this law, there should be equal pay for both men and women who does an equal job in the
same workplace. If there are additional bonuses, pay, stock options, profit sharing, holiday pay,
life insurance, car insurance among others should be done fairly across everyone in that
workplace. It also emphasizes that, if a company wants to harmonize pay, then it should be done
equally to everyone in that organization. An individual who receives one of the above right
violations is supposed to report urgently to the Equal Employment Opportunities Commission of
United States.

Overtime Right
The law stipulates to the employers that for every employer who requires the employee to work
an extra time, they should compensate the employee by paying a certain premium to them. The
employee must receive the extra pay for the hours worked which were out of the schedule. This
extra work may be on weekends or night shifts depending on the agreement you have for the
both of you.
Family and Medical Leave
The law requires the employee should be given a maximum of twelve weeks that are unpaid
during a one-year period for them to care a newborn, foster child, adopted child, to attend to the
employee’s own serious condition or even to care for a sick family member. This law applies to
all public agencies, which includes state, federal or local employers, schools, and private sectors
that have more than fifty employees.
