Kierkegaard/Nietzsche Philosophy 3104 Is Nietzsche’s thought nihilistic? To address this question, define the word, nihilism (and provide a reference for the definition), as you will use it in your essay and in the course of your discussion include the following issues: Is his understanding of will to power nihilistic? Is his account of truth in Beyond Good and Evil nihilistic? Is Zarathustra as Nietzsche present him a nihilistic figure? Support your statements and interpretations with direct references to specific texts and avoid large, unsupported generalizations. You can review the last page of the syllabus for additional comments on issues related to your papers. I encourage you to discuss the questions with others in the class. If you find someone’s interpretation of a particular point compelling and you want to use it, say that in a footnote. If you work with several people and you learn from each other, note at the beginning of the paper that you have discussed the questions and various responses to them with… (names of the people). Learning from each other is great. The written paper must be your own work and not shared with others. If you use secondary sources including the internet, always not them. A word of caution: The internet has many incompetent and/or inadequate discussions on Nietzsche. Quite a few students have been led astray by relying on them. Your essay should be eight to ten double-spaced pages in length.

Nietzsche and Nihilism
Introduction
The word ‘nihilism' is derived from the term ‘Nihil', which means nothing. It is mostly
used to define that substance, value or quality which is not in existence. The same word, Nihil,
has also been used to develop terms such as annihilate which means to reduce to nothingness or
to destroy entirely1. In that vein, nihilism is the belief that all values that human beings uphold
add up to nothing and are unknown. Consequently, since the values are nothing and are
unknown, they cannot be communicated. Nihilism associates itself with the end of pessimism
and skeptic that results in the absence of loyalties. Friedrich Nietzsche, the renowned German
Philosopher, is known to be the source of the nihilistic thought. In his book, ‘Will to Power'
Nietzsche indicates that the beliefs and the consideration of something to be true are false on the
basis that there is no true world. According to him, there is no proper structure or actual order
that is in the world except that which man gave it. In that regard, this paper examines the
Nietzsche thought with the primary aim of establishing whether it is nihilistic.
Whether Nietzsche and his understanding of the will of power is nihilistic
In ‘The Birth of Tragedy’ Nietzsche portrays nihilism as "uncertain" in that it can be
symptomatic of either quality or shortcoming. Nietzsche asserts that nihilism is a vital stride in
the move to a revaluation of all values. Inactive nihilism is described by a weak will and active

nihilism by a solid will. Nietzsche stresses that nihilism is only a necessary chore and not an end
in itself2.
Nihilism, as per Nietzsche, is the wildest type of cynicism. Put basically, the conviction
everything is good for nothing, yet this distorts the idea. Nihilism is a transitional stage that goes
with human advancement. It emerges from exhaustion. At the point when individuals feel
distanced from values and have lost the establishment of their value framework, however, have
not supplanted it with anything, then they move toward becoming nihilistic. They wind up
noticeably disillusioned with the prideful way of "truth" and "morality" et cetera, yet in the
meantime perceive that what is self-absorbed is essential. The thought of choice appears to be
opposing. Values, however starting from the sense of self, have been put in a circle so far outside
and "over" that they are untouchable. Any endeavor to truly make sense of "reality" or place a
'genuine reality' has turned out to be inconceivable, hence the world seems insignificant and
valueless. The skeptic understands that all criteria by which 'this present reality' have been
measured are classifications that allude to an imaginary, built world. The feeling of distance
results in weariness.
"Nihilism would be a decent sign," Nietzsche writes in his scratch pad. It is an important
transitional stage, purging and gathering up obsolete esteem frameworks so that something new
can ascend in their place. He expounds on two distinct types of nihilism, active nihilism and
detached nihilism. Latent nihilism...
