All the texts we read discussed language directly. In the third cycle, we tried to use the concept of Americanization as defined by de la Gaarde, which did not directly address language, to explore how language could fit into it. Whereas in Cycle 1 you were allowed to use your own personal experiences, a big challenge in Cycles 2 and 3 was to stick to the texts and avoid personal examples. Now that we have developed better tools to work more intensively with the texts themselves, in Cycle 4 I encourage you to use these texts to reflect on your own life once again. Prompt for Essay 4 The central question guiding Cycle 4 is "What's the role of language in building people's identities? While you are encouraged to use your own experience, a good text will: • reflect on personal experiences and what their deeper meaning is in forming people's identities; show how these experiences relate to the reflections, ideas, and concepts put forth by Mellix and at least one more author, develop a working hypothesis of the role of language in identity building.
