INSTRUCTIONS:
Trinket Public Relations has been retained as public relations counsel to a brand-new art gallery,
District 12. Billionaire Katniss Everdeen is the gallery’s founder. It will open June 9, 2017, with
an opening gala event. Its first exhibit will be provided by maximalist (graffiti/street-style) artist
Peeta Mellark. Your job is to develop public relations materials to promote the grand opening
and the premiere exhibitor. (Additional details can be found in the SS17 Scenario Brief.)
Peeta Mellark from Bakers’ Dozen Studio was selected as the premiere exhibitor at District 12’s
opening night gala. Mellark’s art style is graffiti/street art. He was selected through a rigorous
juried process from more than 50 artists who applied.
We will now assume that June 9, 2017 has come and gone. The gala was a success. The
celebrities and special guests you invited all came. Overall attendance exceeded expectations.
And one of Mellark’s works, “Throwing Bags of Flour,” sold for a record $7.3 million –– the
most ever at a gallery opening. Coriolanus Snow, president of Capital Empire (an entertainment
business), purchased it.
Your task for Writing Project 7 is to develop a news release to announce this news to the media.
Your news release must reflect the format and style elements described in your textbook and
discussed in class. In addition to basic formatting requirements, your release must also include at
least three quotes: one from Snow, one from Mellark and one from Everdeen (one quote each).
Your news release must reflect the format and style elements described in your textbook and
discussed in class.
o Remember the inverted pyramid.
o Remember that you can invent quotes for your speakers. In this case, you have no choice.
o Remember who your target audience is.
o Remember the news voice and attribution.
Effie Trinket serves as the contact person. See the scenario brief for her contact information.
The release date for this release must be June 12, 2017.
SCENARIO BRIEF/ASSIGMENTS FOR SS17
Scenario Brief: District 12 Art Gallery
There are hundreds of art galleries around the country dedicated to the promotion
of national and international artists seeking exposure to critics and buyers.
These galleries provide a platform to connect artists and their artwork to the most
discerning collectors worldwide. As part of this platform, galleries offer
promotional services, state-of-the-art exhibition spaces and a support network for
artists to learn, grow and flourish. Collectors are provided with a broad range of
original artworks to accommodate all budgets.
All of these facts are true. What follows is not, but is based on reality. These
facts will be the basis for many of your writing projects this semester.
Our scenario assumes that a new art gallery is opening up in Austin, Texas, by social
network founder (InstaSnap) and billionaire, Katniss Everdeen. The art gallery,
District 12, will exhibit works from up-and-coming artists.
District 12 will be opening on June 9, 2017. The opening gala will host some of
today’s biggest celebrities of stage, screen, music and sports. The gala will feature
works by a single artist. (During other times, there will be two to three artists
exhibited at a time.)
Your firm, Trinket Public Relations, has been hired to promote District 12 art
gallery. Effie Trinket, APR, is your boss. Her contact information is
effie.trinket@thecapital.com and her phone number is 123-456-7890.
THIS SCENARIO IS FICTIONAL. THERE IS NO DISTRICT 12 ART GALLERY.
THERE IS NO TRINKET PUBLIC RELATIONS.
