In your own words, define quantitative research and provide two examples of quantitative designs with a brief explanation of each design. Identify a potential quantitative research study that is important to nursing and describe which design you would use for this study, why you would use that design, and how the information generated from the study could be applied in nursing practice. Reflect as to the value of quantitative research adding to the science, knowledge, and practice of nursing. Responses #1 (LeTuc) In my own words, quantitative research is data that can be displayed with numbers or measurements. These numbers and measurements are objective and represents the “what” or “how” of data/questions (Goertzen, 2017). There are 4 types of quantitative research; descriptive, correlation, quasi-experimental, and experimental. In correlation research, we are trying to figure out the relationship between 2 different variables (The State University of New Jersey, 2021). An example of this would be the correlation between hours studied and test outcomes. Quasi-experimental research looks at the cause and effect relationship in 2 variables (The State University of New Jersey, 2021). Also, there is not an independent variable that the researcher influences. An example of this would be how age affects heart function. An example of a potential quantitative research study could be “Does animal therapy help with anxiety during hospital stays?” This can be measured by rating anxiety before and after animal therapy. The design would work best as correlation research because we are trying to find the correlation between 2 variables. This can be applied in nursing practice as a different type of way to help the patients through rough times while staying in the hospital. I believe quantitative research in nursing is the basis of evidence-based, especially when dealing with the obvious numbers that the research brings. MoPe I would describe quantitative research as research that is done using objective data, statistics, and all while using rigorous control studies. Doing this one is able to manipulate data to stress that measurement of variables. For example two different quantitative designs would be descriptive research and experimental research. (Bloomfield & Fisher, 2019) Descriptive research can be defined as “those studies that are conducted for the purpose of describing the characteristics of a certain phenomena or selected variables”. (Melnyk & Fineout-Overholt, 2019) Another example of quantitative research would be experimental design with is defined as “a studies who's purpose is test the effects of an intervention or treatment on selected outcomes.” This is really the strongest design and the most commonly used when providing strong results. (Melnyk & Fineout-Overholt, 2019) To identify a potential quantitative research study that is important to the nursing world would be a experimental study to assess weather or not it is beneficial to implement a lift team in the ICU setting. Where there is a team of nursing assistants that their only job is to ensure that ICU patients are receiving timely repositioning. This could be done by gathering previous data on pressure injuries for the previous two years, then implementing the lift team for on year. After comparing the data in order to assess weather or not the intervention was helpful or if this intervention really didn't make a difference. This is again the strongest design of a quantitative study. (Melnyk & Fineout-Overholt, 2019) To reflect on the value and importance of quantitative research in science, knowledge, and practice of nursing would be to say at the very least it is the backbone of all intervenes put into place in the healthcare setting. Meaning that for an intervention to be considered best practice or evidence based it needs to be researched and challenged with other data in order to decide what is beneficial and harmful. This would arguably be the strongest form of research that one can do where there is a backing to the conclusion. (Astroth & Chung, 2018).
