Answer Classmate' Discussion

Discussion:

As I was drawing my alien while reading the PowerPoint presentation, I was slightly confused and felt like I was doing something wrong. Once I moved on and looked at the discussion post for this week, I gained clarity. As you can see in my alien featured below, I would say it does conform to the typical stigma. I portrayed my alien as green, with big red eyes, holding a peace sign with skinny arms, and an oversized head. Though I did not add antennas to my alien, the thought did cross my mind as well as drawing the alien with only one eye. Even though I have never seen an alien, I immediately knew what I wanted to draw. I believe this has to do with the way aliens are portrayed in the media. After reflecting on the PowerPoint, I discovered that the two concepts I found best fit my conformed alien drawing were priming and representative heuristics. We learned through the PowerPoint that priming is defined as our way of interpreting the world based on what we are thinking about or topics and ideas we have heard or discussed. Priming related to my alien drawing because all the ways I have visually seen an alien portrayed in the media influenced the way I drew it. In contrast, the second concept, representative heuristics is used to describe one object to conclude the first object acts like the following. The PowerPoint presentation used the example of higher-priced wine seeming more expensive; similarly, aliens have been stereotyped to have a certain physical appearance which was depicted in my drawing without any claims of support. The PowerPoint goes on to mention that though representative heuristics are rule of thumb, they do not lead to accuracy. This concept was reflected in my drawing because in my subconscious I created what I thought an alien would look like based on exposure from the media.IMG_4668.heic Download IMG_4668.heic
